손상기 작품에 나타난 실존적 의미의 치유성

국문 초록

본 연구는 39세의 나이로 요절한 화가 손상기의 삶과 그의 대표적인 작품들을 통해 실존적 의미로서 그의 작품에 드러나는 치유성을 살펴보았다. 여수에서 태어나 신체적 핸디캡과 병약한 육체가 어린 시절부터 트라우 마로 작용하여 아웃사이더적 삶의 행로를 걸어가게 되었고, 실존적 위기와 고립의 아웃사이더로서 자신과 현실 에 대한 철저한 비판과 냉철한 직관으로 일관된 그의 문학적 사고와 시각적 글쓰기가 콜린 윌슨의 아웃사이더 이론과 빅터 프랭클의 로고테라피적 관점을 바탕하여 어떠한 방식으로 영향을 끼치고, 어떤 의미를 지니는지 그의 작품을 통해 연구하고자 하였다. 특히 <자라지 않는 나무>나 <시들지 않는 꽃>, <공작도시>시리즈는 그 자신의 자아상과 인생관을 반복적으로 대변해 주는 소재로 그림이라는 매체를 통해서 현실의 갈등과 긴장 및 노이로제를 해소하고 승화시켰는데, 이는 미술사적 과업의 성취를 넘어서 다분히 미술치료의 효과를 무의식적 으로 체험해 낸 사례가 되었다. 그에게 있어서 그림 작업은 그 어떤 것의 대안이 아니라 그것 자체로 유일한 그만의 생존방식이었기 때문에 모든 진실한 내면이 담겨 있는 치유의 장이었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 손상기 의 삶과 작품을 분석함으로써 상처 입은 내면을 어루만지는 그만의 방식과 자신 안에 있는 그림자와 아니마를 의식하고 표현함으로써 참된 자기에로 나아가게 하는 미술작업이 갖는 독특하고 강렬한 실존적 의미인 치료로 서의 미술(art as therapy)을 그의 작품에서 재조명하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This study explored the life of the painter Sangki Son who died at the age of 39 and the healing aspects of the existential meaning in his representative paintings. Son, born in Yeosu, a coastal city, was physically handicapped and weak in his childhood, which was traumatic to him. This trauma led him to an outsider's life. He regarded himself as an isolated outsider in existential danger. His literary philosophy and visual writing cast a harsh criticism on himself and the reality. This study inquired into the meanings found in his works and the influences of his ideas and attitudes on his works, based on Colin Wilson's outsider theory and Victor E. Frankl's logotherapy. His self-image and view of life were consistently reflected in the paintings such as , , and . These works were not only an artistic achievement showing the sublimation of the tensions and neurosis in real life but also a case showing the subconscious healing effects of art therapy. The act of painting was his own way of surviving in itself rather than an alternative to something. Healing took place as he expressed his true inner self in the paintings. Through the analysis of Son's life and works, this study shed light on his way of curing the hurt inner self and expressing the shadows and anima in him to reach his true self, and on the strong and unique existential meaning of art as therapy expressed in his works.
