아이오와대 초등교사 양성 과정의 특징과 질 관리 방법

국문 초록

이 연구는 미국 아이오와 대학의 초등 교사교육 사례를 (웹)문서 분석, 교수회의 참여관찰, 교수 면담의 방법으로 조사한 사례연구이다. 연구문제는 초등교사 양성 프로그램의 특징과 교사교육의 질을 관리하는 방법의 탐구이다. 발견된 교사 양성 프로그램의 특징과 교사교육의 질 관리 방법은 다음의 여덟 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 초등 교직과정으로의 입문은 학부생, 학사편입생, 대학원생에게 열린 개방형을 택하고, 학력을 막론하고, 동시에 경쟁 선발하는 방법으로 양질의 교사자원을 확보한다. 둘째, 초등도 중등과 마찬가지로 전공별 학사학위와 초등 교직과정을 이수하는 방식으로 전문성을 확보한다. 셋째, 교과교육방법 과목의 축소, 심화영역 및 학급운영 중심의 교육실습, 18학점에 달하는 실습과, 실습 전담 인력 확보, 내실 있는 실습지도 방법으로 전문성과 현장성을 증진한다. 넷째, 교사교육 성취기준의 도입과 기준 도달을 관리하는 e포트폴리오의 활용으로 교육의 질을 관리하고 과목 간 연계를 높인다. 다섯째, 교수회의를 통해 교사교육을 효율적으로 점검하고, 개선한다. 여섯째, 학생의 학습이 모든 논의의 중요한 관심사이다. 일곱째, 문제에 신속히 반응하고, 공정하게 논의하고, 책임은 공유한다. 여덟째, 학생의 모집과 관리에서 유연한 자세를 취한다.

영문 초록

This is a case study which explored elementary teacher education program of the University of Iowa by web document analysis, participant observation, and faculty interview. Research questions were two: What are the characteristics of the teacher education program and what are the teacher education quality control strategies? Findings were as follows: ① Entering into the teacher education program is open to college students, students with B. A. or B. S. degree, and graduate students. Quality of students is controled by simultaneous competitive selection process of all those candidates. ② Like secondary teachers, elementary school teachers should obtain B. A. or B. S. degree in addition to completing elementary teacher license requirements. In this way, professional quality of elementary teacher is increased. ③ Reducing the method courses, practicum focused on a major subject and classroom anagement, 18 credit hours of practicum and student teaching, professionals and supervisors who are responsible to student teachers, and their quality teaching are the factors contributing to the professional and field appropriate teacher education. ④ Teaching standards and monitoring of performance by web based system called ePortfolio™ are the major quality control devices. They increase the connections and unity of contents among courses. ⑤ Faculty meeting played the major role in quality control. Through faculty meeting, teacher education was continuously monitored and innovated. ⑥ Students and their learning were the most important concern of all faculty. ⑦ Faculty responded quickly to the problems, discussed the problem fairly, and shared responsibilities. ⑧ Faculty were flexible in many ways to meet the needs of the students.
