아처의 형태발생론적 접근(Morphogenetic Approach)에 대한 탐색적 연구:‘성찰’의 재개념화를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 교육사회학의 오래된 논쟁거리 중 하나인 실증주의 대 해석주의, 구조 대 행위 자성의 이분법적 갈등에 대한 대안으로서 마가렛 아처의 형태발생론적 접근(Morphogenetic Approach: 이하 MA)을 비판적으로 고찰한다. 본 연구는 교육학 이론의 양대 패러다임인 실 증주의와 해석주의에 대해 MA가 기반하고 있는 비판적 실재론과 분석적 이원론이 기여할 수 있는 바와 그 한계를 탐구한다. MA는 비판적 실재론에 근거하여 교육 현상 기저에 있는 ‘인과기제’와 ‘과정’을 설명하는 데 초점을 맞춤으로써 교육학 연구에 새로운 시각과 연구문 제를 던져준다. 또한 MA는 분석적 차원에서 구조와 행위자성을 분리한 ‘분석적 이원론’을 통해 구조와 행위자성을 융합한 기든스와 부르디외의 이론의 한계를 극복할 수 있게 한다. 특히 본 연구는 MA에서 구조와 행위자성의 매개 역할을 하는 ‘성찰(reflexivity)’의 개념과 이를 활용한 아처의 경험적 연구를 제시한다. 마지막으로 MA의 국내 교육학 연구에의 적용 가능성을 비판적으로 탐색하고 후속 연구 과제를 제안한다.

영문 초록

This paper introduces Margaret Archer’s Morphogenetic Approach (hereafter, MA) as an alternative to resolve the dichotomous conflicts between positivism and constructivism, objectivism and subjectivism and structure and agency. This research starts with discussing the limitations of positivism and constructivism, two major theoretical paradigms in the educational studies. Then, we examine ‘critical realism’ and ‘analytical dualism’ underpinning MA, which has potential to address the binary thinking mentioned above. We argue that critical realism, an ontological framework on which MA is based, can contribute to educational studies education by casting new perspectives and research questions due to its focus on processes and causal mechanisms underlying educational phenomena. Furthermore, analytical dualism, analytical separation of structure from agency devised by Archer, overcomes the limitations of central conflationists such as Giddens and Bourdieu. This paper then suggests Archer’s notion of‘reflexivity’, playing a mediating role between agency and structure, and empirical studies utilizing the concept. Lastly, implications of MA for educational studies and future studies are proposed.
