일반계 고등학교 교육과정 편성 관행의 유지와 변화

국문 초록

이 글은 종래 교육과정 사회학 분야에서 본격적인 분석 대상이 되지 못했던 교육과정 개혁이 학 교 현장에 적용되는 일면을 분석하여 보았다. 선택중심 교육과정은 이전의 교육과정과는 크게 달라 개발 무렵에는 논란이 컸으나 막상 적용된 이후에는 이전에 비하여 심각한 문제 제기가 이루어지지 않고 있다. 선행의 연구들은 교원이나 시설의 한계로 인한 제약에 관한 분석은 시도하였으나, 학교 내에서 교육과정을 운영하는 관행에 대한 분석은 소홀하였다. 이 글에서는 학교 관찰과 면담 등의 자료 수집을 통하여 고등학교 교육과정 편성 관행이 무엇이며, 그것이 선택중심 교육과정 적용 과 정에서 어떻게 유지되고 변화되고 있는지를 분석하여 보았다. 분석대상이 되는 교육과정 편성 관행 은 학교 내 교사의 배치, 학급 편성 방식과 관련된 것에 초점을 맞추었다. 자료 분석을 통하여 선택 중심 교육과정은 여건의 한계 차원과 구분되는 종래 교육과정 편성 관행의 영향을 받으며 위축되고 있는 상황, 관행은 유지되나 그것이 유지되는 과정이 변화하는 측면을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 분 석을 통하여 학교에서의 교육과정 운영 관행의 유지와 변화에 관한 향후 과제를 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study is to analyze organizing school curriculum after the 7th national curriculum implementation. To analyze the actual situation of organizing elective curriculum in general high schools, I have visited five schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi region and conducted interview and observation. Each school is responsible for determining either increase or decrease in the number of units of curricular subjects and determining the arrangement of school year and semester; it is also responsible for decision-making in organizing the classes for the students who should take a certain curricular subjects and placing the teachers for those subjects. Although student choice is not guaranteed fully due to the limitation in the teacher supply and school facility, concrete procedures have been influenced by the convention shaped long time. While the process of organizing school curriculum includes various steps, the most critical issue in the decision-making process is whether or not a given choice is conducive to teaching hours of each teachers, giving students an edge in college entrance examination, and organizing class routine. Hence, the curriculum is being managed in a much reduced manner than the proposed range of choice for given conditions. The range of choice for curricular subjects is being narrowed and the number of courses to be taken is being reduced, compared to the first year of implementation. Such a setback is due to the assessment that calculation of students' school achievement record tends to be done in a more advantageous way when many students choose to take the same subject. Such thinking is also shown to exert influence upon increase or decrease in the number of curricular units to be taken and arrangement of school year and semester.
