학생다운 몸의 규율과 학교 위기

국문 초록

본 연구는 몸의 사회학, 특히 푸코와 고프만의 몸 이론을 도입하여 학교 현장에서 학생/청소년 몸을 둘 러싼 갈등을 학교 위기의 중요한 요인으로 설명하려 한다. 푸코의 지식/권력론은 몸적 욕망을 생산?관리 하고 특정한 방식으로 몸을 훈육시키는 규율체계에 대한 통찰력을 제공해준다. 푸코의 시각에서 볼 때, 학교는 ‘학생다움’과 ‘학생답지 못함’을 특정한 방식으로 정의하고 평가하는 규율 담론과 다양한 규율 방법 을 갖고 있으며, 그러한 규율체계를 통해 학생을 감시하고 처벌함으로써 학생다운 몸을 생산하려 한다. 한편, 고프만은 개인이 몸에서 그리고 몸에 의해 자아정체성을 구성하고 표현하는 행위이론적 관점을 제 시해줌으로써, 학교에서 학생이 다양한 복장변형 등을 통해 청소년으로서의 개성과 정체성을 표출하려는 끊임없는 시도를 이해할 수 있게 해준다. 푸코와 고프만에 터하여, 본 연구는 청소년의 몸을 ‘학생답게’ 훈육시키려는 학교 규율의 권력과 청소년으로서의 정체성과 자기 개성을 유지하려는 학생의 요구와 저항 간의 마찰을 학교 위기의 중요한 요인으로 간주한다. 본 연구는, 학교 위기의 요인 중에서 근대적 학교문 화와 탈근대적 청소년 문화의 문화충돌도 있겠으나, 그 이면에 ‘학생다운’ 몸을 조형하기 위한 규율체계와 그것에 의한 청소년의 신체적 자유와 권리의 일상적 침해가 훨씬 더 근본적인 갈등임을 주장한다.

영문 초록

Based upon the sociology of body, particularly Foucault and Goffman’s theories of body, this study takes the conflicts concerning the body of student/adolescent as responsible to a great extent for the recent crisis of school. Foucault’s theory of knowlege/power gives an insight into a system of discipline which produces and manages bodily desires in a particular way. From Foucault’s point of view, school has developed the discourse and technique of discipline, which define, and distinguish between, ‘good’ and ‘bad’ students in a way that the former can be produced by the school’s surveillance and punishment. On the other hand, Goffman, offering an action-theoretic perspective, addresses not only social construction of body but the expression and construction of self-identity in and through body. His theory leads us to understanding that the student continuously tries to transform his student uniform and hair style to keep his identity as an adolescent. Taking Foucault and Goffman’s approaches to body, this study sheds light on frictions between school rules disciplining the student body and students who claim bodily freedom to maintain self-identity as adolescent. It may be true that the recent crisis of school comes partly from the cultural conflicts between the modern culture of school and the postmodern character of adolescent. In my view, however, one must see through the fundamentally problem-causing factor behind cultural conflicts, which is the system of school discipline daily suppressing the bodily freedom and right of student as an adolescent.
