고고학 관련 대중교육의 활성화에 관한 연구

국문 초록

일반대중을 상대로 한 고고학과 고고유적의 보존과 관리의 중요성에 관한 교육은 급속한 산업화와 도시화, 그리고 여러 가지 자연적 또는 인위적 요인에 의해 소중한 유적의 훼손과 파괴가 계속 진행되고 있는 현실에서 무엇보다도 시급히 이루어져야 하는 문제이다. 고고유적의 보존과 관리에 있어서 가장 중요하고 효과적인 방법은 다양한 고고학 관련 교육활동을 통하여 과거로부터의 소중한 유산인 고고유적의 존재와 중요성에 관한 일반대중의 인식을 일깨우는 것이다. 일반적인 박물관의 유물전시를 통한 고고학 관련 교육활동 외에 고고학 관련 대중교육에는 다음과 같은 다양한 방법이 적용될 수 있다. 대중매체를 통한 대중교육, 박물관이나 기타 관련기관에서의 고고학 관련 사회교육 프로그램, 학교 교과과정과 연계된 고고학 관련 교육 프로그램, 발굴현장이나 고고유적에 대한 직접적인 체험을 통한 교육, 그리고 전국 또는 지역적 단위 규모의 다양한 고고학 관련 행사들을 통한 대중교육 등 여러 가지 접근방법이 있으며 이러한 다양한 교육방법에 대한 많은 관심과 연구가 필요하다. 고고학 관련 대중교육이 미약한 우리 고고학계 현실에서 공ㆍ사립박물관과 대학박물관, 그리고 여러 고고학 관련 기관에서의 고고학 관련 대중교육과 고고학의 대중화에 대한 적극적인 관심과 연구, 그리고 실제적인 운영노력이 앞으로 크게 요구된다. 이러한 노력은 일반대중사이에서의 고고학에 대한 학문적 인정과 더불어 고고학의 사회적 역할을 다하는 일이며, 또한 소중한 고고유적의 보존과 관리에 긍정적인 효과를 가져 올 수 있는 아주 중요한 일이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of public education in archaeology and various educational methods to educate the general public about archaeology itself and the importance of the protection and management of archaeological sites. This study also suggests some approaching methods to improve the situation of public education in archaeology in Korea. Archaeological sites usually are influenced by various environmental conditions and man-related factors. Irreplaceable archaeological sites are also confronting massive destruction and much damage in the middle of rapid industralization and modernization processes. For mitigating these man-related negative impacts on archaeological site, the best way is to educate the general public about the importance of the preservation of archaeological sites through public education in archaeology. For this approach, there are several ways to educate the general public about archaeology and the importance of archaeological heritage. Among them, public education methods in archaeology through mass media, public lecture or workshop, active field participation, and public activities supported by the national or regional administration are useful and effective tools to educate the general public about archaeology and the importance of the preservation of archaeological sites. It is also important to induce the general public into actual field protection activities for the preservation of archaeological sites. For instance, archaeological site steward program, involvement on National Trust activity, field participation on actual archaeological research activities are currently avaliable for this purpose. In present, Korean archaeologists and archaeological society do not give much attention on public education in archaeology for the preservation of archaeological sites. This attitude must be changed in order to preserve valuable archaeological sites successfully, along with affection and recognition from the public on archaeology. It is an imperative task that archaeologists and archaeological societies in Korea give more attention on public education in archaeology through the development of effective public education programs, the development of field participation programs for the public on actual archaeological activities, and effective communication with the general public.
