국문 초록

기존 무문토기시대 전기 편년 연구는 유물복합체의 형식이나 양식의 상이성이 곧바로 시간성을 반영할 것이라는 전제에 지나치게 경도되어 왔으며, 편년의 방법 또한 주로 형식학적 상대연대결정법과 교차편년에 의존하여 왔다. 토기 구연부 문양에 기초한 현 편년안은 유구 간 중복관계, 유적·유구 내 공반관계, 14C연대 측정치와 같은 직·간접적인 근거 자료에 기초하여 볼 때 여러 모순점과 문제점이 발견된다. 그간 시간성으로 이해되어 왔던 서로 다른 문양의 토기들이 동일 유구에서 공반되는 경우가 많으며, 중복을 이룬 유구에서 발견된 토기 문양의 선후관계가 현재의 편년안과 일치하지 않는 사례 또한 적잖이 발견된다. 더욱이 현 편년 틀의 골격인 토기 문양의 퇴화과정이 계기적으로 관찰되는 실제 유적사례는 거의 찾아보기 어려우며, 존속기간이 짧은 유적에서 시간차로 상정된 다양한 문양이 공존하기도 한다. 또한 지금까지 축적된 수많은 14C연대 자료는 현재의 편년안과 부합되지 않는다. 오히려 14C연대 분포 결과는 무문토기시대 이른 시기 이래 다양한 토기 문양이 공간을 달리한 채 중서부 각 지역에서 공존했음을 반영하고 있다. 이 같은 양상은 서로 다른 토기 문양, 형식차를 시간적 차이로만 해석하 고 있는 현재의 편년 틀에 자료적 결함과 논리적 모순점이 있음을 시사한다. 이 같은 문제 인식에 따라, 본고는 무문토기시대 전기 토기의 시간성 파악에 주안점을 두고 형식학적 방법에 의한 편년안의 대안으로 14C연대 측정치의 적극적인 활용 가능성과 분석 방법론을 모색하는 데 주력하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

By critically reviewing the results of typological analysis and other relative chronological methods, this paper evaluates available radiocarbon dates and emphasizes the co-existence of typical Early Mumun (plain-coarse) Period assemblage types or cultures in the midwestern region of the Korean Peninsula. The current chronology, based on a typological arrangement of pottery rim types and designs, does not correspond with the archaeological evidence indicated by overlapping features, artifact associations and radiocarbon dates. Different types of pottery designs considered thus far as time markers were in fact found to be associated with each other and overlapping features do not coincide with the current chronology. The supposed process of degeneration or gradual disappearance of pottery design is not supported by the stratigraphic excavations, while the pottery remains of several different designs were unearthed in association. The evaluation and analysis of a substantial amount of radiocarbon dates accumulated so far do not support the current chronology which emphasizes sequential and lineal change. While several assemblage types or cultures, namely the Gakhyeong Pottery Culture, Garak-dong Culture, Misa-ri Culture and Yeoksam-dong Culture, coexisted in midwestern Korean Peninsula during the Early Mumun Period, they underwent dynamic changes in terms of their social boundaries.
