임당 고총 동물부장 연구 : 조류 부장 양상을 중심으로

국문 초록

주·부곽식 목곽묘의 부곽은 단경호, 대호와 같은 토기로 가득 차 있다. 본고는 고총의 성대한 매장의례에서 토기로 채운 부곽의 의미가 무엇인지에 대한 고민에서 출발한다. 임당 유적의 고총고분에 부장된 토기 속에서는 다양한 조류, 어류 등의 동물유존체가 다량으로 출토되었는데, 이를 통해 망자의 사후세계를 위한 물품으로 당시 최고의 기술로 생산된 토기뿐 아니라 다양한 음식 또는 식재료가 담긴 토기가 부장되었음이 확인되었다. 토기에는 꿩 科를 중심으로 기러기 屬, 오리 屬, 두루미 科, 느시 科, 고니 屬 등 여섯 종의 조류가 상어와 같은 해산 어류나 다양한 패류와 함께 담겨졌는데 그 부장 방식은 다분히 규범적이고 상징적이다. 주곽에서는 동물부장 토기의 기종, 그에 따른 부장 동물의 종류와 손질된 부위 등에서 전반적으로 정연한 모습을 보이는 반면, 부곽에서는 여러 동물이 뒤섞여 호류에 부장된다. 동물부장 방식의 다양한 변이는 부곽 부장 토기에 담긴 동물의 종과 부위에 대한 구체적인 분석을 통해 선명하게 드러났다. 이 과정에서 일정한 원칙 속에서 부장 동물을 선택하지만 각각의 상황에 맞게 수량과 조합을 결정한 복수의 주체가 등장한다. 임당 고총에서의 동물부장 연구를 통해 당시인들이 망자와 함께 부장하고자 한 것은 단지 토기만이 아니며, 오랜 기간 누적적으로 형성해온 상징체계 하에서 선택된 다양한 동물들도 포함되었음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 주곽과 부곽에 반영된 구체적인 의례 행위의 차이, 이러한 매장의례를 긴 시간동안 유지한 일정 범위의 공동체, 그 이면에 숨은 혹은 전면에 드러난 분묘축조자의 의도까지 규명할 수 있는 실마리를 쥐고 있다.

영문 초록

The subordinate outer coffins of main/subordinate coffin-type wooden chamber tombs are filled with earthenware pottery such as short-necked jars and large jars. This study begins with an exploration of what the meaning of such a subordinate outer chamber filled with earthenware pottery would have been in relation to the magnificent burial rituals that took place at these anceint tombs. A large quantity of faunal remains, such as various birds and fish, were excavated in the earthenware pottery buried in high-mound tombs at the Imdang sites. Through this, it was established that earthenware pottery produced using the best technology of the time and earthenware pottery containing various foods or ingredients had been buried as goods for the afterlife of the deceased. In the earthenware pottery, six species of birds, including pheasants, geese, ducks, cranes, bustards and swans, were deposited alongside sea animals such as sharks and various shellfish; the burial method was found to be quite normative and symbolic. In the main chamber, the types of the earthenware pottery in which animal bones were buried, the species of buried animals, and the parts that were trimmed were generally in good order; on the other hand, various animals were mixed and buried in the jars in the subordinate outer chamber. The various changes that took place in the method of burying the animal bones were clearly revealed through a concrete analysis of the species and body parts of animals from the pottery buried in the subordinate outer chamber. It was established that animals had been buried according to certain principles, but the presence of agents who made decisions regarding the quantity and combination for each situation could also be confirmed. Through a study of the burial styles for the animal bones in the ancient tombs at Imdang, it was noted that not only earthenware pottery, but also various animals selected under a symbolic system that had been formed cumulatively over a long period of time, had been buried with the deceased. This provides a means of investigating the differences in specific ritual actions reflected in the main chamber and the subordinate outer chamber, the range of the community that had maintained these burial rituals for a long time, and the intention of the builders of the tomb that had been hidden behind or emerged from the facade.
