영문 초록

The author has made a chart review of 58 patients suffering from alcoholic mental disoders who had been admitted to the Neuropsychiatric Ward of Chonnam University Hospital from January 1976 to December 1980. The results are summarized as follows; 1) The admission rate of alcoholic patients has increased each year. The mean percentage of annual alcoholic admissions to the neuropsychiatric ward during the period was 6.37%. 2) The age distribution ranged from 24 to 63 years. And all except one were males. 3) From the analysis cf personal data it was found that eldest siblings were overrepresented and that the alcoholics lived in low socioeconomical environment, worked as a labourer and tended to reside in rural areas. 4) The common premorbid personalities found in the alcoholics were passive aggressive, inadequate and obsessive compulsive personalities. 5) Economic, intrafamilial and occupational problems proved to be the common precipitating factors. 6) According to the diagnostic distribution, 40 patients were diagnosed as alcoholic psychoses and 34 of these patients had delirium tremens. 7) Twenty four patients were admitted by way of the emergency room and 52 were admitted by involuntary measures. 8) The alcohol consumed was mostly a distilled spirit (So-Joo), and a majority of alcoholics were under 20 years of age when they started drinking. 9) Delirium Tremens appeared to be more prevalent in rural areas than in urban areas. Economic problems proved to be the most common precipitating factor in the rural areas, while in the urban, the factor was mental distrubance.
