국문 초록

이 논문은 W. B. 예이츠의 「내전 시기의 명상」 중의 「선조들의 저택」과 셰이머스 히니의 「공작새의 깃털—데이지 가넷에게」를 영국 장원시의 전통에 비추어 비교하여 살펴본다. 장원시는 목가시의 하부 장르이며 아일랜드 문학의 전통에서는 “대저택의 시”가 이에 해당하는데, 이 시에는 귀족가문의 대저택과 주변 자연풍경을 바라보는 특정한 시각으로서의 목가적 비전이 내재되어있다. 이러한 인공적인 양식으로서의 목가와 사실주의적 시각으로서의 목가 사이에는 갈등과 긴장이 존재한다. 본 논문은 두 시인의 장원시에서 이러한 전통적인 목가적 비전과 현실이 어떠한 긴장관계를 나타내는지 살핀다. 아울러 귀족의 저택과 관련된 역사적 폭력의 문제와 이상적인 과거에 대한 회고적 시선 및 미래에 대한 전망이라는 목가적 양식의 제반 특징들도 살펴본다. 이를 통해 전통적 목가 양식이 역사와 시대, 공간에 따라 새롭게 쓰일 수 있는 목가적 형식의 생산성을 드러내고 아울러 예이츠와 히니의 시적 영향관계도 연구하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper reads Yeats’s and Heaney’s country house poems, “Ancestral Houses” in “Meditation in Time of Civil War” and “Peacock’s Feather— For Daisy Garnett” as pastoral mode. It attempts to compare their concerns: how Yeats and Heaney exploit the mode and how Heaney responds to Yeats. In Irish literature big house poems are equivalent to country house poems in English literature. “A pastoral vision” works as a way of looking at an aristocratic house and its estate, not just looking at them. There is tension between pastoral as realistic observation and pastoral as artificial mode. This paper studies the two poets’ pastoral vision and the way the tension works in their poems, including how they look at an aristocratic house and its estate, historical violence involved with them and time as nostalgic past and imagined future in the pastoral mode. This study will pay attention to the ever-productivity of pastoral mode and the country house poems and Heaney’s response to Yeats’s poems.
