국문 초록

예이츠는 코울리지를 1925년 이후에 읽었고, 그의 작품을 철학자의 이론과 조화시킬 수 있었다. 이 논문은, 두 시인들의 작품들을 비교하면서, 어떻게 코울리지와 예이츠가 그들이 처한 상황에서 비극을 수용하고 그들의 시 속에서 그 비극들을 승화시키는지를 연구한다. 예이츠는 인간은 비극을 이해할 때에만 삶을 진정으로 살아낼 수 있다고 생각한다. 따라서 예이츠의 시에서 중요한 주제들중의 하나는 비극이다. 예이츠와 코울리지는 비극적 순간들과 상황을 기쁨으로 변용시키기 위하여 그들의 작품 속에서 많은 시도를 한다. 두 시인들은 두 편의 훌륭한 시들 — 코울리지의 「절망의 송시」와 예이츠의 「청금석」을 썼다. 이 두 편의 시들을 읽으면, 이 작품들이 주제와 분위기에서 매우 유사하나는 점을 발견한다. 이와 동시에, 이 논문은 예이츠와 코울리지의 작품 속에서 자신들의 아이들을 바라보면서, 다음 세대에 대한 구원의 가능성을 모색한다. 비극적 상황속에서 각 시인은 인간의 유약함과 한계성을 발견하지만 미래 세대를 통해 희망과 비극적 기쁨을 상상하게 되는데, 코울리지의 「한밤의 서리」와 예이츠의 「내 딸을 위한 기도」의 작품 분석을 통하여 관련된 주제를 전개시켜 나간다.

영문 초록

Yeats read Coleridge after 1925 and could balance his work with the abstraction of the philosopher. This paper, by comparing their poems, studies how Coleridge and Yeats in their situations accept tragedies and sublimate them in their poems. Yeats thinks that man could understand life only when he understands tragedy: thus, one of the main elements in his poetry is tragedy. Both Yeats and Coleridge make attempts in their poems to turn tragic moments and situations into joy. The two poets wrote two great poems: Coleridge, “Dejection: An Ode” and Yeats, ”Lapis Lazuli.“ On reading these two poems, I find them strikingly similar in the subject matter and moods as well. On the subject of children, the paper discusses Yeats and Coleridge, by looking at their own child in their poems. In tragic situations, each poet could see human weakness but imagine the future with hopes, as exemplified by Coleridge’s “Frost at Midnight” and Yeats’s “A Prayer for My Daughter.”
