국문 초록

이 논문은 선사시대와 초기 역사시대에 한반도와 그 주변 지역의 고대 인류의 이주와 정착을 논의하고 최신 연구 경향 가운데 하나인 디아스포라(diaspora) 고고학에 대하여 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 고대 인류의 이주와 정착, 디아스포라 등의 정의 및 형태와 이를 고고학적으로 확인하는 방법론 등을 간략하게 검토하였다. 이를 토대로 고대 동아시아에서 발생한 인류의 이동과 정착의 고고학적 증거를 한반도와 주변 지역을 중심으로 종합적으로 검토하고 논의하였다. 새로운 집단의 이주를 시사하는 고고학 자료와 함께 이에 따른 문화적 갈등과 통합 양상도 살펴보았다. 중국 고대 문헌이 한반도와 주변 지역의 주민 이주를 언급한 주요 사례를 해당 시기와 지역의 고고학적 기록을 토대로 검토하였다. 특히 고대국가의 형성 과정에서 건국 집단의 이주를 기록한 부여, 고구려, 백제의 사례를 검토하면서, 그 역사적 가능성을 고고학적 자료를 바탕으로 논의하였다. 문헌 기록이 풍부한 지역과 시대에서는 인간 이주와 정착의 구체적 양상을 비교적 쉽게 이해할 수 있다. 하지만 선사시대와 초기 역사시대의 경우 고고학 자료만으로는 이주, 정착, 분쟁, 통합 등의 양상을 자세히 논의하기는 상대적으로 어렵다. 본 연구는 한반도와 그 주변 지역의 고대 인류 이주와 정착의 다양한 특성과 고대 사회 문화 발전에 대한 그들의 사회·문화적 기여를 파악하고자 하였다. 이러한 연구를 통해 고대 사회의 복합성과 다문화성, 다양성 및 유동적 정체성 등을 다시 인식하는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This paper discusses the human migration and settlement of ancient populations on the Korean Peninsula and its adjacent areas in the prehistoric and early historical times and examines one of the major research trends, the diaspora archaeology. Variations and scholarly definitions of migration, settlement, and diaspora are briefly discussed and the archaeological methodology for confirming them is reviewed. Based on this, the archaeological evidence of human migration and settlement in ancient Northeast Asia is comprehensively reviewed and discussed, with focus on the Korean Peninsula and surrounding areas. Along with archaelogical data suggesting the migration of new population, the aspects of cultural conflict and integration are also examined. Important cases in which ancient Chinese records refer to the human migration on the Korean Peninsula are discussed based on archaeological evidence of the relevant period and region. In particular, archaeological feasibility of the population movement is discussed while reviewing the cases of Buyeo, Goguryeo, and Baekje, each of which has brief records of migration of founding groups in the state formation process. In regions and eras with abundant written records, it is relatively easy to comprehend the specific aspects of human migration and settlement. It is challenging, however, to discuss migration, settlement, conflict, and integration in detail using only archaeological data in the prehistoric and early historical times. The purpose of this study is to understand the various characteristics of migrating populations and their socio-cultural contributions to the cultural development of ancient societies on the Korean Peninsula and its adjacent areas. It is hoped that this study will provide an opportunity to reevaluate the complexity, multiculturalism, diversity, and flexible cultural identity of ancient society.
