《금병매(金甁梅)》의 반금련(潘金蓮) 정체성에 대한 자기심리학적 고찰

국문 초록

본 논문은 명말 소설 《금병매(金甁梅)》 속 반금련(潘金蓮)의 나르시시즘(narcissism)적 정체성을 코헛(Heinz Kohut, 1913~1981)의 자기심리학(self-psychology) 관점에서 분석하는 데에 목적이 있다. 기존 연구에서는 반금련의 미모, 음란함, 악함을 부정적으로 평가하거나 도덕적 타락, 사회적 억압의 희생으로 해석하였으나 이는 반금련의 복합적인 정체성과 내면적 결핍, 욕망 등 심리적 요인을 간과한 한계가 있다. 본 논문은 미인, 음부, 악녀로서의 정체성에서 반금련의 병리적 나르시시즘 성격과 행동이 표출된다고 보고, 그 이면에 자리 잡은 결핍과 욕망을 자기심리학적 관점에서 분석하고자 한다. 먼저, 반금련은 어머니와의 공감적 관계 실패로 인해 응집적 자기가 발달하지 못하고, 물질 중심 문화 속 상품화되는 경험으로 자기감마저 상실하면서 과대적 자기 단계에 고착된다. 이는 반금련의 자기구조에 근본적인 결함을 초래하며, 나르시시즘적 성격이 형성되는 지점이 된다. 둘째, 반금련의 자기 결함은 성적 자기대상으로서 남성을 끊임없이 추구하게 하고, 자기애적 상처의 반복적 경험은 도착적인 성 중독과 왜곡된 성행위로 이어진다. 반금련의 성적 행동은 단순한 육체적 욕망의 발현이 아니라 자기 결함을 보상받기 위한 병리적 시도로 이해할 수 있다. 셋째, 반금련의 자기 결함은 내면의 수치심으로 자리 잡고, 이는 자기애적 격노를 초래하여 서문경의 여인들을 향한 파괴적 공격으로 표출된다. 특히 송혜련과 이병아의 사례는 반금련의 자기애적 격노가 단순한 질투를 넘어 체계적이고 파괴적인 공격의 형태로 진화하는 과정을 보여준다. 이는 그녀의 내면에 축적된 두려움과 수치심이 얼마나 깊고 병리적인 수준이었는지를 방증한다. 본 논문은 반금련의 비극적 죽음이 단순히 개인의 악행이나 사회적 억압의 결과가 아닌, 결핍된 자기가 필연적으로 겪을 수밖에 없는 비극적 여정임을 보여준다. 명말의 심학(心學)이 인간의 본성을 있는 그대로 수용하고자 했던 것처럼 반금련의 나르시시즘은 결핍된 본성의 극단적 표출로 이해할 수 있다. 또한, 본 논문은 중국 고전소설에 현대 심리학 이론을 적용하여 인물의 내면 심리와 행동 동기를 체계적으로 분석하는 새로운 방법론을 제시하며, 여성 인물 해석에 새로운 가능성과 시각을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to analyze the narcissistic identity of Pan Jinlian in the late Ming dynasty novel Jin Ping Mei from the perspective of Heinz Kohut’s (1913-1981) self-psychology. Previous studies have either negatively evaluated Pan Jinlian’s beauty, lasciviousness, and evil nature, or interpreted them as results of moral degradation and social oppression, overlooking the complex identity, inner deficiencies, desires, and psychological factors of Pan Jinlian. This paper views her identities as a beauty, lustful woman, and villainess as manifestations of pathological narcissistic personality and behavior, and aims to analyze the underlying deficiencies and desires from a self-psychological perspective. First, due to the failure of empathic relationship with her mother, Pan Jinlian failed to develop a cohesive self, and became fixated at the stage of grandiose self as she lost her sense of self through experiences of commodification in a materially-oriented culture. This creates fundamental defects in Pan Jinlian’s self-structure and becomes the point where her narcissistic personality is formed. Second, Pan Jinlian’s self-defect leads her to constantly seek men as sexual self-objects, and the repeated experience of narcissistic wounds results in perverse sex addiction and distorted sexual behavior. Her sexual behavior can be understood not as a simple manifestation of physical desire but as a pathological attempt to compensate for self-defects. Third, Pan Jinlian’s self-defect manifests as inner shame, which leads to narcissistic rage expressed through destructive attacks against the women of Ximen household. In particular, the cases of Song Huilian and Li Ping’er demonstrate how Pan Jinlian’s narcissistic rage evolves from simple jealousy into systematic and destructive attacks. This evidences how deep and pathological the fear and shame accumulated in her inner self were. This paper demonstrates that Pan Jinlian’s tragic death is not simply a result of individual evil acts or social oppression, but rather an inevitable tragic journey that a deficient self must experience. Just as the late Ming Mind-Heart Philosophy sought to accept human nature as it is, Pan Jinlian’s narcissism can be understood as an extreme manifestation of deficient nature. Furthermore, this paper is significant in that it presents a new methodology for systematically analyzing characters’ inner psychology and behavioral motivations by applying modern psychological theory to Chinese classical literature, while also offering new possibilities and perspectives in interpreting female characters.
