국문 초록

《燕子箋》은 희곡으로만 알려졌으나, 平話小說 판본이 발견되면서 원작이 소설이었음이 밝혀졌다. 평화소설 《연자전》은 명대 초기에 간행된 것으로 추정되며, 傳奇와 비교해 보면 대사가 거의 일치하여, 阮大鋮이 이를 바탕으로 전기를 창작했음을 알 수 있다. 평화소설과 전기는 같은 이야기를 다루지만, 서로 다른 주제를 표현한다. 평화소설은 운명적 사랑을 강조하며 시작과 결말에서 하늘이 정한 인연을 강조한다. 반면, 전기는 사대부의 풍류로 시작하여 황제에 대한 칭송으로 끝난다. 전기는 崑腔을 사용하여 더욱 아름답고 슬픈 느낌을 주며, 노래와 무대 연출을 통해 공연의 아름다움을 극대화한다. 특히, ‘공연 속의 공연(劇中劇)’을 통해 관객에게 화려한 볼거리를 제공한다. 이러한 점에서 전기 《연자전》은 민간에서 유행했던 소설과는 달리 사대부들 사이에서, 심지어 南明 조정의 弘光帝에게까지 특별한 사랑을 받았다. 완대성은 자신의 예술적 재능을 발휘하여 전기 《연자전》을 단순한 소설에서 화려한 공연예술로 변모시켰다.

영문 초록

Yan Zi Jian was known only as a play until a version of the Pinghua novel was discovered, revealing that the original work was a novel. This Pinghua novel is estimated to have been published in the early Ming dynasty, and upon comparison with the Chuanqi, it is evident that the dialogue is nearly identical, indicating that Ruan Dacheng used it as a basis to create the Chuanqi. While both the Pinghua novel and the Chuanqi convey the same story, they express different themes. The Pinghua novel emphasizes fateful love, highlighting a destiny ordained by heaven at both the beginning and end. In contrast, the Chuanqi begins with the elegance of the literati and concludes with praises for the emperor. The Chuanqi utilizes Kunqu melodies to evoke a more beautiful and melancholic atmosphere, enhancing the performance’s beauty through song and stage direction. Notably, it provides audiences with a splendid spectacle through the use of a play-within-a-play. For these reasons, the Chuanqi Yan Zi Jian was especially beloved among the literati and even by the Hongguang Emperor of the Southern Ming dynasty, unlike the novel popular among the common people. Ruan Dacheng employed his artistic talents to transform the Chuanqi Yan Zi Jian from a simple novel into a magnificent stage performance.
