국문 초록

본 연구는 공인 숙박시설인 원우의 입지와 분포에 대해서 전국적 규모로 기초적인 검토를 시도한 것이다. 원우는 신라 하대에 기원을 두고, 고려시대의 불교계가 종교 실천 및 경제활동의 거점으로서 적극적으로 참여하면서 전국적으로 확산하였다. 따라서 그 입지형태는 교통결절지이자 사찰 기능과의 동거라는 두 가지 조건을 충족시키는 특수한 것이었다. 여말선초의 원우는 불교의 쇠퇴와 더불어 역참제와 같이 국가가 직접 관리하게 되었고, 역의 보조적 역할을 하게 되었다. 그래서 원우는 거시적으로 보면 역로를 따라 분포했으며, 역은 약 500개소, 원은 약 1500개소로 역보다 조밀했다. 3배 차이가 나는 것은 역로상에도 역보다 원우가 빈번하게 배치되는 것, 경주나 개경과 같은 옛 수도 중심 역로가 폐지된 후에도 원우만 계속 남겨진 것, 산간오지나 북부 국경지대 등 교통량이 적은 간로들을 중심으로 역 대신 원우만 있는 경우가 많은 것 등 때문이며, 그 중 일부는 역로 기능을 대신할 소위 ‘원로’가 형성되었다. 일부 원로는 고려시대까지는 역로였던 것으로 간주되는 구간도 있어서, 원로가 역로 폐지 후 역로기능을 일부 담당했던 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This study attempted a basic nationwide review of the location and distribution of Wonwoo(院宇), an official accommodation facility. Wonwoo originated in the Silla Dynasty and spread throughout the country as the Buddhist community during the Goryeo Dynasty actively participated as a base for religious practice and economic activities. Thus, its location was special, satisfying two conditions: a traffic nodule and a cohabitation with a temple function. Along with the fading of Buddhism, Wonwoo from late Goryeo and early Joseon came to be directly managed by the state, acting as an auxiliary to the postal station system. So Wonwoo was distributed along the postal station road macroscopically, and the station was about 500 places and the circle was about 1,500 places, which were denser than the station. The threefold difference was due to the frequent deployment of Wonwoo on the station road than on the station road, the fact that Wonwoo remained even after the old capital such as Gyeongju in Shilla and Gaegyeong in Goryeo were abolished, and that Wonwoo was often left instead of the station, mainly on low-traffic roads such as mountainous areas and northern border areas, some of which formed so-called 'Wonwoo-road' to replace the station road’s function.
