국문 초록

본 연구는 다국적기업이 구축한 글로벌 생산 네트워크의 전략적 활용에 초점을 두고, 글로벌 금융위기로 초래된 수요 충격이 기업의 성과에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 한국수출입은행에서 제공하는 제조업 분야 모기업-현지법인 연계자료를 토대로 다국적기업과 유사한 성향을 지닌 비교 기업을 성향점수매칭 기법을 이용하여 구축한 후 기업의 성과(매출액 성장률)를 비교·분석하였다. 분석 결과, 금융위기(2007-2009) 기간 동안 다국적기업의 매출액 성장률은 비교그룹에 속한 국내 로컬기업에 비해 높았으며, 통계적으로 유의하였다. 이와는 대조적으로 비금융위기(2010-2012) 기간으로부터 추정한 두 그룹 간 매출액 성장률 차이(평균처치효과)는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 이러한 추정 결과는 다양한 성향점수매칭 기법을 활용하여 구축한 표본에서도 강건하였다. 다국적기업의 기업 간 무역 비중 변수를 교차항으로 구성하여 추가 분석을 실시한 결과, 두 그룹 간 매출액 성장률 차이가 기업 간 거래 비중이 클수록 커지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 글로벌 생산 네트워크를 적극 활용할 수 있는 다국적기업이 글로벌 금융위기에 따른 수요 충격에 탄력적으로 대응할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다.

영문 초록

This study investigates the impact of demand shocks caused by the global financial crisis on firms’ performance and emphasizes the importance of strategic utilization of global production networks established by multinational enterprises (MNEs) in determining its impacts. The parent-affiliates merged data in the manufacturing sector provided by the Korea Export-Import Bank is used in this study. The authors employ the propensity-score matching (PSM) techniques to construct a control group consisted of local domestic firms corresponding to MNEs in a treated group and estimate the average treatment effect. The main finding indicates that during the global financial crisis (2007-2009), the sales growth of MNEs is higher compared to local domestic firms belonging to the comparison group, and this difference is statistically significant. In contrast, the difference in sales growth rate between the two groups estimated from the post-financial crisis period (2010-2012) is not statistically significant. These results remain robust even when utilizing various propensity score matching techniques. Additional analyses are conducted by incorporating the intra-firm trade proportion variable as an interaction term, revealing that the difference in sales growth rate between the two groups increases with a higher proportion of intra-firm trade. This suggests that MNEs that leverages flexibly global production networks can resiliently respond to demand shocks caused by global financial crises.
