국문 초록

펠라기우스주의는 구원자 그리스도를 중심으로 삼는 그리스도교 신앙의 알맹이를 제거한 채, 그리스도교를 단순한 인본주의로 환원시켜 버렸다. 아우구스티누스가 죽는 날까지 매달렸던 은총과 자유의지, 구원과 예정 등과 같은 주제는 그의 구원관을 가장 생생하게 만날 수 있는 신학의 자리이다. 프란치스코 교황은 ‘새로운 펠라기우스주의자’를 조심하라고 거듭 경고한다. 인간의 노력과 성취를 지나치게 내세우는 영적 세속주의에 맞서 아우구스티누스는 은총과 자비는 하느님께서 거저 주시는 선물임을 강조한다. 아우구스티누스에 따르면, 예정이란 하느님이 베푸실 은혜에 관한 하느님의 예지이며 준비이다. 하느님은 원하시면 모든 이를 구원하실 수 있지만, 인간의 자유를 존중하신다는 것이 아우구스티누스의 구원론적 전망이다. 은총은 인간의 노력과 공로에 대한 보상이 아니라 무상의 선물이며 ‘하느님의 것(res Dei)’이라는 진리야말로 아우구스티누스가 펠라기우스주의에 맞서 죽는 날까지 지켜내려 했던 그리스도교 신앙의 본질이다. 아우구스티누스는 펠라기우스파가 내세운 엘리트 이상주의에 맞서 누구나 공짜로 누릴 수 있는 은총의 샘터로 하느님 백성을 이끌었다. 특히 구원의 은총은 완벽한 도덕성을 지닌 자들이 자기 힘으로 획득하는 특권이 아니라, 누구에게나 거저 베푸시는 하느님의 자유로운 선물이라는 사실을 보편 교회가 깊이 성찰하고 확신하게 된 것은 은총의 박사 아우구스티누스의 결정적 공헌이다. 그러나 어둑한 구석도 없지 않다. 특히 하느님의 보편적 구원 의지에 관한 난해한 해석이나 예정론은 과도하고 소모적인 신학 논쟁의 불씨가 되었다.

영문 초록

Pelagianism stripped Christianity of its essence, which centers on Christ the Savior, and reduced it to mere humanism. Themes such as grace and free will, salvation, and predestination—subjects to which Augustine dedicated himself until his death—represent the theological core where his understanding of salvation is most vividly encountered. Pope Francis has repeatedly warned against “new Pelagians,” urging vigilance against their influence. In opposition to spiritual worldliness, which excessively emphasizes human effort and achievement, Augustine underscored that grace and mercy are gifts freely given by God. According to Augustine, predestination is God’s prescience and preparation for the grace He will bestow. While God can save all if He wills, Augustine’s soteriological perspective highlights that God respects human freedom. Grace is not a reward for human effort or merit but an unmerited gift, the “res Dei” (thing of God). This truth forms the essence of Christian faith, which Augustine steadfastly defended against Pelagianism until his final days. Standing against the elitist idealism promoted by the Pelagians, Augustine guided the people of God to the fountain of grace freely accessible to all. His decisive contribution as the “Doctor of Grace” led the Church to deeply reflect and firmly affirm that the grace of salvation is not a privilege earned by morally perfect individuals through their own strength, but a free and unconditional gift from God offered to everyone. However, Augustine’s legacy is not without its complexities. His intricate interpretations of God’s universal salvific will and the doctrine of predestination sparked excessive and often exhausting theological debates, becoming a source of prolonged contention in Christian thought.
