Perception of Career Infusion Effectiveness in English-Language University Classes

국문 초록
Korean higher education has begun a shift from generalized education to more specific preparation for finding a job. Equipping graduates for employment has become important to students, universities, government, and businesses. The knowledge, skills and abilities associated with career development have been achieved through stand-alone career services or on an informal basis through faculty advising and extracurricular activities. However, there is an increasing argument for infusing career development directly into learning curricula though, there are no comprehensive guidelines for infusing career education, so the question remains as to what the most effective manner for infusing career development in Korean higher education. Widespread English-language classes present an opportunity for improving English while pursuing career-development content. This paper suggests using the Australian Blueprint competencies for evaluating career education. Next, it proposes two approaches, communicative exercises and career research, for infusing career development into the curriculum. The study then surveyed 132 students taking a course using no career development, communicative exercises, or career research concerning their perceived improvement in the 11 competencies. There were only significant results for five competencies. The group studying with no career development infusion perceived the most development in interacting positively and effectively. The group studying with communicative career development exercises perceived the most progress in changing and growing. The group studying with career investigation perceived the most progress in obtaining career information, in understanding the relationship between work, society, and the economy, and in understanding the process of securing work.
