영국 동인도회사를 위한 로버트 포춘의 중국 여정이 세계 차산업에 미친 영향

국문 초록

스코틀랜드 식물채집가이며 식물학자인 로버트 포춘은 1848년 영국 동인도회사를 위하여 중국에 파견되어 중국의 가장 우수한 차의 나무와 씨앗을 얻어 내어 인도 히말라야 지역으로 보내는 비밀 임무를 수행하였다. 3년간의 중국 여정 동안 중국 차 산지인 저장성, 푸젠성과 안후이성을 방문하였으며, 12,000개 이상의 중국의 최고급 수준의 차나무 묘목과 씨앗을 수집하고 차를 재배하고 가공할 수 있는 전문가들을 채용하여 1851년에 제다 도구와 함께 인도 히말라야 지역에 정착시키는 성과를 이루어 내었다. 포춘이 보낸 중국 차나무 묘목과 씨앗은 북인도 전 지역에 번성하고 있다. 영국의 인도차 수입비율은 인도와 실론 차산업의 발전으로 1866년 4%에서 1896년 89%로 급증하였고 그에 반해 같은 시기의 중국 차수입 비율은 96%에서 11%로 급감하였다. 영국은 중국에 더 이상 의존할 필요가 없게 된 것이다. 포춘의 중국 여정은 아쌈으로부터 시작한 인도 차산업의 발전의 밑거름이 되었으며 인도 차산업의 발전을 앞당겼다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In 1848, Robert Fortune, a Scottish plant collector and botanist, embarked on a secret journey to China for Britain’s East India Company in order to obtain the highest quality tea plants and seeds from the most desirable regions of China and to transport them to India. During his three-year journey, Fortune visited the tea-producing regions of Zhejiang, Fujian, and Anhui and transported more than 12,000 tea seedlings and seeds to the Indian Himalayan region, along with tea processing implements and detailed information about Chinese tea processing. Additionally, Fortune hired skilled Chinese tea processing specialists and established them in the Indian Himalayan region in 1851. The Chinese tea plants and seeds sent by Fortune were reported to be thriving throughout North India. British imports of tea from India and Ceylon, which accounted for 4% in 1866, increased to 89% in 1896, and Chinese tea imports dropped from 95% to 11% over the same 30-year period. Britain no longer had to rely on Chinese tea. Fortune's journey to China provided momentum to end the Chinese tea monopoly and enabled global expansion of the tea industry.
