이상의 몽타주와 매체 미학

국문 초록

이 글은 1930년대 초중반 매체 상황을 재구성하여 이상의 예술론, 창작 방법과의 관련성을 검토하였다. 매체사의 관점에서 볼 때 1930년대 초중반은 초기 유성영화가 도입된 사적 의미를 보여준다. 유성영화의 기술을 통해 이미지와 소리가 합치된 영상 미학이 본격적으로 전개되며 영화의 미학인 몽타주 기법이 새로운 가능성을 모색하게 되었다. 한편 동시대는 라디오와 축음기, 강연회 등 소리를 통해 본격적인 대중문화와 미학이 전개된 소리의 시대이기도 하며, 초기 유성영화에서 무성영화가 전개한 이미지-소리의 미학과 그 영향 역시 간과할 수 없다. 소리를 녹음할 수 없던 무성영화 시대에서 영상 이미지, 음악, 변사 등 매체의 소리는 다채로운 소리의 층위를 보여주며 예술과 매체에서 이미지-소리의 새로운 미학적 역학 관계를 보여주었다. 특히 이상이 주목한 르네 클레르 등 초기 유성영화의 감독과 영화들은 영화사에서 무성영화에서 유성영화로의 이행을 성공적으로 이끌었다는 평가를 받는데, 이들은 무성영화에서부터 출발한 이미지-소리의 몽타주 미학을 적극적으로 유성영화에 활용하였다. 요컨대 매체론의 관점에서 볼 때 동시대의 예술은 매체 기술이 실현한 소리의 효과를 어떻게 재현(이미지)과 몽타주 기법으로 활용할 것인가에 주목한다. 이상의 초기 소설 ｢지도의 암실｣(1932)과 ｢휴업과 사정｣(1932)은 위와 같은 매체적 사유와 현대 예술에 대한 인식을 통해 이상 자신의 예술론을 고민하고 그것을 소설의 양식으로 재현한 작품으로 해석할 여지가 있다. 특히 두 작품에는 몽타주 미학에 입각하여 현실 속에서 불가능한 입체적 시공간을 동시적으로 재현하고 실재적 세계에 대한 체험의 미적 감각과 시적 사유를 전면에 드러내고 있다. ｢지도의 암실｣에는 초기 유성영화가 보여준 소리의 층위들과 그 층위에 의한 이미지들이 등장하며, ｢휴업과 사정｣은 이미지-소리의 재구성을 통해 현대 예술론에 대한 이상의 진지한 사유를 살펴볼 수 있다. 이상 문학의 미학인 비동시적인 요소들이 동시적으로 존재하는 입체성의 미학은 이상이 보여준 영화와 같이 현대 예술과 미학에 대한 사유로부터 그 의미를 검토해 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article reconstructed the media situation in the early and mid-1930s and studied its relationship with Lee Sang's art theory and creative method. From the perspective of media history, the early and mid-1930s show the historical significance of the acceptance of early talkie. Through technology of talkie, video aesthetics combining image and sound were developed in earnest. This era was also the era of sound in that full-fledged popular culture and aesthetics developed through sound technology, such as radio, gramophone, and popular lectures. Additionally, the aesthetics and influence of image-sound developed by silent films in the early talkies cannot be overlooked. In the silent film era, when sound could not be recorded, the sound of media such as video images, music, and speech of byeonsa(live narrator) showed various layers of sound and a new aesthetic relationship between image and sound in art and media. In particular, early talkie directors and films, such as René Claire, whom Lee Sang liked, were evaluated as having successfully led the transition from silent films to talkies in film history. And they actively utilized the image-sound aesthetics that originated from silent films in talkies. In this way, from the perspective of media theory, art in this era focused on how to utilize the effects of sound realized by media technology as a methodology of representation. Lee Sang's early novels, “Darkroom of a Map” (1932) and “Shutdown and the reason”(1932), are works that ponder Lee Sang's own artistic theory through the above-mentioned thoughts on media and awareness of modern art and represented them in the form of novels. In particular, these two works simultaneously represented cubist space and time, which is impossible in reality, and through this, the aesthetic sense and poetic thoughts of experiencing the real world were brought to the fore. In “Darkroom of a Map”, the layers of sound shown in early talkies and images based on those layers appeared, and “Shutdown and the reason” showed Lee Sang's serious thoughts on modern art theory through the reconstruction of image and sound. The meaning of the cubist aesthetics in which asynchronous elements exist simultaneously, which is the aesthetics of Lee Sang's literature, can be examined from Lee Sang’s thoughts on modern art and aesthetics, such as the movies.
