English translation of canonical books has an important position in the foreign dissemination of Chinese culture. The Spring and Autumn Annals of Master Yan, as a classic book of Chinese traditional culture, contains profound cultural connotations, and its outstanding political concepts and philosophy of life are still praised by the world. However, the overseas dissemination effect of Yoav Ariel's version of The Spring and Autumn Annals of Master Yan is not satisfactory. As a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural communicative activity, whether translation can accurately convey culture depends largely on what kind of translation method is used. Appiah proposed Thick Translation in 1993, and domestic scholars have found that the theory of Thick Translation is of great significance to the translation of canonical books. Therefore, this paper analyzes Yoav Ariel's version from the perspectives of explicit thick translation and implicit thick translation, and appendices, notes and commentaries are applied to the translation of canonical books. This paper discusses the application of thick translation theory in the English translation of canonical books to help readers better understand the culture of the source language and promote the dissemination of Chinese culture.

영문 초록

典籍外译在中华文化对外传播中有着重要的地位。《晏子春秋》作为中国传统文化经典读本，蕴含着深刻的文化内涵，其卓越的政治理念和人生哲理，至今仍为世人传承称颂。然而欧永福英译《晏子春秋》的海外传播效果并不理想。翻译本身作为一种跨语言、跨文化的交际活动，能否准确地传递文化，一定程度上取决于采用何种翻译方式。深度翻译理论保留了源语文化的特征，使目的语读者能够充分理解源语作品。国内学者研究发现深度翻译理论对典籍翻译具有非常重要的意义。因此本文以欧永福英译本为研究对象，从显性深度翻译和隐性深度翻译角度出发将附录、注释和评注等方法运用于典籍翻译中，探讨了深度翻译理论在典籍英译中的应用，以期帮助英语读者更好的理解源语文化，助力中华文化海外传播。
