홍일식의 민족 문화론과 한국문화의 지역-세계성과 특수-보편성

국문 초록

지식의 식민화에 대한 반성 없이 지역-로컬에서 주체적으로 학문을하기는 불가능하다. 인문학의 경우는 특히 그렇다. B. S. 산토스가 ‘대학의 탈식민화(decolonizing the university)’를 외친 배경이 여기에 있다. 산토스의 메시지인즉 제3세계에서는 이제 더 이상 제1세계에서 생산된 지식들을 단지 가르치고 습득하는 관행에서 벗어나 스스로 지역-로컬을 반영하고, 지역-로컬민의 감성을 살린 교육을 새롭게 시작해야 한다는 것이다. 본 연구에서 일찍이 대한민국 지식계에 만연한 식민성을 비판하면서지식계의 대오각성과 분발을 촉구했던 홍일식의 민족문화론을 오늘의시점에서 재고해 보려는 이유가 여기에 있다. 홍일식에 따르면 지식의식민화는 정신의 식민화, 문화의 식민화로 확장되면서 고착된다. 대한민국의 경우도 일제 강점기 이후 식민지 지식인 시대, 신식민지 지식인 시대를 거쳤지만, 아직 주체적 지식인의 시대를 맞이하지 못하고 있다는것이 우리의 민족사에 대한 홍일식의 진단이다. 서구의 지배를 받았던제3세계의 적지 않은 피식민지 국가들이 세계화 시대로 진입하면서 재차 서구적 글로벌 근대성에 병합되어 희생양이 되고 있다. 이러한 시대적 환경에서 민족문화를 연구하는 것은 식민 지배로 인해 망실된 문화적전통을 회복하는 일과 세계화의 부당한 개입에 맞서 문화적 지역성과 특수성을 고수해야 하는 이중의 부담을 떠안게 된다. 그리고 더 나아가서는 민족문화 자체를 지역적이면서 세계적인, 특수하면서 보편적인 양식으로 승격시켜야 하는 과제가 뒤따르게 된다. 본 연구에서는 이런 논점과 연구 목표 아래 홍일식의 문화영토론을 기존의 보편주의와는 ‘다른 보편주의(another universalism)’라는 인식의틀로 재조명해 보고자 하며, 탈식민화 운동의 일환으로 전개된 그의 민족문화 연구는 더 이상 ‘대한민국’이라는 지리적 경계에 갇힌 로컬의 사상이 아니라 ‘한국적 특수성’과 ‘세계적 보편성’의 접목을 성공적으로 결합한 글로컬 사상이었음을 규명해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

It is impossible to study autonomously in a local context without reflecting on the colonization of knowledge. This is especially true for the humanities. The background to B. S. Santos’ call for “decolonizing the university” is rooted in this context. Santos’ message is that in the Third World, it is now necessary to move away from the practice of simply teaching and acquiring knowledge produced in the First World. Instead, there is a need to start anew with education that reflects and preserves the local sensibilities of the people. In this study, the rationale for reevaluating Hong Il-Sik's theory of national culture, which criticized the prevailing colonialism in South Korea's knowledge system and advocated for the dishallucination of the knowledge system, is presented. According to Hong Il-Sik, the colonization of knowledge extends to the colonization of the mind and culture, becoming deeply entrenched. In the case of South Korea, it has gone through the era of colonial intellectuals after Japanese rule, and the era of neo-colonial intellectuals. However, our analysis of national history indicates that we have not yet entered the era of independent intellectuals. Many post-colonial countries that were once under Western domination are now being re- integrated into Western global modernity as sacrificial lambs as they enter the era of globalization. In this contemporary environment, studying national culture involves the dual burden of reclaiming cultural traditions lost due to colonial rule and upholding cultural regionalism and specificity in the face of globalization. Furthermore, there is an additional task of elevating national culture itself into a form that is both regional and global, specific and universal. In this study, we will reexamine Hong Il-Sik's discourse on cultural territory within the context of themes and research objectives, categorizing it as “alternative universalism”. His research on national culture, developed as part of the decolonization movement, will reveal that it successfully achieved a fusion of “Korean specificity” and “global universality”, rather than being confined to the geographical boundaries of South Korea.
