This paper dealt with the models of second language acquisition, learning, and use. This necessitated to some extent looking, firstly, at issues of second language acquisition such as Monitor Model, UG approach, and the explanation of second language acquisition; and, secondly, the models of second language learning and use investigating the learner language, a Two-Cone Model of second language learning, and models of sentence generation and use. According to Krashens Monitor Model, language acquisition is a natural process which takes place when the affective filter is not activated. To reduce the effects of the affective filter, preproduction-level students should be permitted a silent period during which they develop listening comprehension. The Designer Methods of the 1970s and 1980s such as Community Language Learning, Suggestopedia, The Silent Way, Total Physical Response, and The Natural Approach are based on Krashens theory. The innateness hypothesis of the UG approach was a possible resolution of the contradiction between the behavioristic notion that language can be acquired by a process of conditioning and the fact that such conditioning is much too slow and inefficient a process to account for the acquisition of a phenomenon as complex as language. Although UG approach researchers dismissed the domain of performance of SL learners, it is hypothesized that L2 acquisition involves different kind of learning engaging in both item learning and system learning. The interlanguage model presents learner language as a system or series of systems between the NL and the SL, sharing characteristics of both. A model that describes the most important aspects of the process of SL learning resulting from formal teaching, and leading to the development of a fairly high degree of linguistic, communicative and cultural competence, is the Two-Cone Model. In this model, communication occurs within a cultural context and consists of the cyclical reintroduction of communicative acts and situations around a structural core. According to the sentence generation model, sentence generation in a second and/or foreign language program seems to proceed from the learning of fixed routines to the learning of semifixed patterns, and through the modification of these semifixed patterns, via analogy and reference to meaning, to produce creative speech.
