鹿門 任聖周의 尙書學의 특징

국문 초록

본고는 조선 후기의 문신이자 학자였던 鹿門 任聖周(1711~1788)의 尙書學을 검토하고 그 특징을 살펴본 논문이다. 그는 經學ㆍ禮學ㆍ學行으로 천거될 만큼 뛰어났으며, 『鹿門集』에는 그의 경학과 예학에 대한 저술이 남아있다. 그러나 이와 같은 이력이나 업적에도 불구하고 그의 학문에 관한 연구는 대부분 성리학에 편중되어 있다. 이에 본고는 녹문 임성주의 상서학의 특징 중에서도 선유의 주석서 수용과 비판을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 임성주는 蔡沈의 『書集傳』의 내용에 대해 약간의 흠이 있으나 대체로 긍정적으로 평가하여 충실하게 수용하였다. 그러나 채침의 주석이 경문의 내용을 분명하게 설명하지 못하거나 설명이 부족하거나 주석에 동의하지 못하는 점이 있음을 밝혔다. 그는 채침이 주자의 초본을 정리하면서 제대로 산정하지 못한 채 조감을 잘못하였다고 하였고, 이 때문에 언해에 오류가 생긴 것이 있음을 지적하였다. 그리고 주자의 『상서』 해석을 대부분 존숭하였으나 주자의 ｢舜典｣의 주석과 ｢禹貢｣의 주석에 의문을 제시하여 묵수하지 않고 비판적으로 수용하였음을 드러내었다. 임성주의 『상서』 주석에 있어 특기할 점은 그가 조선 선유들의 설을 수용하였던 점이다. 그는 西人ㆍ老論系인 沙溪 金長生ㆍ三淵 金昌翕 등의 『상서』 주석을 인용한 것이 많이 있는데, 선유의 주석을 묵수하지 않고 비판적으로 취사선택하였다. 그리고 언해의 오류에 대해서도 4가지의 유형을 들어 지적하였다. 이처럼 임성주는 채침과 주자의 설을 존숭하면서도 묵수하지 않고 비판적으로 『상서』를 이해하며, 『尙書正義』나 조선 선유들의 설을 수용한 것은 주자의 『상서』 연구와 채침의 『서집전』의 부족한 부분과 오류를 보완하고자 하는 의도에서 비롯된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 임성주의 상서학은 채침의 『상서』 주석의 범주를 벗어났으며, 아울러 주자의 설만 묵수하는 학문 풍토에서 벗어나 독자적인 『상서』 연구를 시도하였다고 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines and examines the characteristics of Shang Su studies of Nokmun Im Seong-ju(1711-1788), a civil servant and scholar in the late Joseon Dynasty. He was outstanding enough to be recommended as a Confucian Classi, Yehak, and academic practice, and his writings on Confucian Classic and Yehak remain in the of the 『Nohkmunjip』. However, despite such history and achievements, most of his studies are focused on Neo-Confucianism. Therefore, this paper focused on the acceptance and criticism of Seonyu's commentary among the characteristics of Shang Su studies of Nokmun Im Seong-ju. Lim Seong-ju had some flaws in the contents of the collection of 『Seojibjeon』 of Cai Shen, but generally positively evaluated them and accepted them faithfully. However, it was revealed that the commentary of Cai Shen did not clearly explain the contents of the scripture, lacked explanation, or did not agree with the comment. He pointed out that Cai Shen made a mistake in the bird's eye view without being properly scrupulous and organized while organizing the abstract of the runner, and that there was an error in the statement. He pointed out that Cai Shen was unable to properly count Zhu Xi's abstract because it was not properly calculated and organized, and that there was an error in Korean annotation because of this. In addition, most of Zhu Xi's interpretation of the 『Shang Su』 was respected, but it was revealed that Zhu Xi's commentary on ｢Canon of Shun｣ and the commentary on ｢Tribute of Yu｣ were not adhered to but critically accepted. Lim Seong-ju's 『Shang Su』 is unique in that he accepted the theories of Joseon seniors. He cited many comments on the of 『Shang Su』, such as Samyeon Kim Chang-heup, but he did not stick to the senior's comments and critically chose them. In addition, he pointed out the errors of the Korean annotation by citing four types. As such, Lim Sung-ju respected the theories of Cai Shen and Zhu Xi, but he did not unconditionally adhere to them, understood 『Shang Su』 critically, and accepted the theories of 『Shangshu Zhengyi』 and Joseon seniors because of the intention to compensate for the deficiencies and errors of Zhu Xi's study of 『Shang Su』 and Cai Shen's 『Seojibjeon』. Im Seong-ju's Shang Su studies are beyond the scope of Cai Shen's 『Shang Su』 study, and it can be evaluated that he attempted his own 『Shang Su』 studies by breaking away from the academic climate that only adheres to Zhu Xi's theory.
