인터넷 종목토론실에서의 회계정보글과 주가폭락위험

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 인터넷 종목토론실 상에서 회계정보를 포함한 게시글이 주가폭락위험에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 했다. 21세기 이후 인터넷의 발달로 개인투자자들은 다양한 재무적, 비재무적 정보를 인터넷상 여러 채널을 통해 습득하여 분석할 수 있게 되었으며, 특히 인터넷 포털사이트 종목토론실을 통해 자신의 의견을 공유하고 토론하기 시작했다. 종목토론실의 활성화로 선행연구에서는 종목토론실의 게시글이 가십(gossip)에 불과한지, 또는 주식시장에 실질적 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보았고, 이에 대해 혼재된 결과가 제시되었다. 본 연구는 주식시장의 행태 중 주가폭락위험에 초점을 두고, 인터넷 종목토론실에서의 논의가 주가폭락위험을 낮추는지 또는 높이는지 살펴봤다. 특히, 익명 기반의 종목토론실에는 무의미하거나 종목과는 무관한 게시글도 많이 등록되기 때문에 회계정보를 포함한 게시글을 정보성을 지닌 게시글로 보아 회계정보 게시글의 비중이 높은 종목에 대해 주가폭락위험이 차별적으로 나타나는지 살펴봤다. 본 연구의 실증분석을 위해 파이썬 기반의 크롤러를 제작하여 2019년부터 2021년까지 국내 유가증권 및 코스닥시장에 상장된 기업을 대상으로 종목토론실의 모든 게시글을 수집해 사용했다. 분석결과, 회계정보가 포함된 게시글의 비중이 증가할수록 차기의 주가폭락위험이 증가하는 결과가 나타났다. 이는 종목토론실 상 회계정보에 기반한 게시글이 기업의 경영자로 하여금 악재를 숨기려는 행위를 억제하지 못하고, 자본시장에서 투자자 반응을 증폭시키는 역할을 하는 증거를 제시한다. 또한, 종목토론실의 회계정보글 비중과 주가폭락위험 간의 양(＋)의 관계가 회계성과가 안 좋은 기업으로부터 기인하는 결과를 확인했다. 이는 회계정보 게시글이 회계성과가 좋지 않은 기업에 대한 부정적인 시장반응을 증폭시켜 주가폭락을 가져오는 결과를 지지한다. 본 연구는 인터넷 종목토론실이 자본시장에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구를 확장했다는 점에서 학문적 공헌점을 지니며, 회계정보글의 비중이 미래 주가폭락위험을 예측한다는 증거를 제시했다는 점에서 실무적 공헌점을 지닌다.

영문 초록

This study examines the impact of stock message board postings on stock price crash risk. With the development of the internet in the 21st century, individual investors can acquire and analyze various financial and non－financial information through various online channels. In particular, investors share their opinions and engage in discussions through online portal sites’ stock message boards. Previous research on stock message boards examines whether the posts on these boards are merely gossip or have an impact on the stock market. This study focuses on stock price crash risk and explores whether discussions in online stock message boards decrease or increase this risk. Given that anonymous－based stock message boards often contain meaningless or irrelevant posts, this study considers posts containing accounting information as informative. As such, we examine whether the proportion of accounting information posts has a discriminatory effect on stock price crash risk. For empirical analysis, a Python－based crawler was developed to collect all posts in stock message boards from 2019 to 2021 for companies listed on the domestic stock and KOSDAQ markets. The results of the analysis show that as the proportion of posts containing accounting information increases, stock price crash risk also increases. This suggests that posts based on accounting information in stock message boards do not suppress managers from hiding adverse information, and instead amplify investor reactions in the capital market. We further find that the positive relationship between the proportion of accounting information posts in stock message boards and stock price crash risk is driven by companies with poor accounting performance. This supports the idea that accounting information posts exacerbate negative market reactions and contribute to stock price crash risk for companies with poor accounting performance. This study makes an academic contribution by expanding the research on the impact of online stock message boards on the capital market. Additionally, it has practical implications by providing evidence that the proportion of accounting information posts predicts stock price crash risk.
