드망즈 주교의 지역교회 설립을 위한 노력

국문 초록

드망즈 주교는 1914년 성 유스티노 신학교를 설립했다. 그의 신학교 설립과 운영의 최종 목표는 한국인 사제들을 배출하고 더 나아가 한국인 주교가 이끄는 자치 선교지를 설립하는 것이었다. 1918년부터 성 유스티노 신학교는 한국인 사제를 배출하고, 1919년부터 교구 분할에 대해 고려하기 시작했다. 구체적인 계획은 1923년 7월 12일 게브리앙 주교에게 보낸 서한을 통해서 알 수 있다. 이 계획에 따르면 먼저 전라도를 분할하여 한국인 자치 선교지로 만들고, 그다음 경상남도 지역을 분할하여 총 4개의 대목구로 만드는 것이었다. 그는 이 계획을 바탕으로 1926년 9월에 포교성성 장관 반 롯숨 추기경에게 보고서 형식을 통해 알렸다. 이후 1929년 프랑스 연설에서도 다시 한번 현지인 사제양성과 현지인 자치 선교지 설립에 대해 사람들에게 알렸다. 드망즈 주교는 1931년 5월 전라도 감목대리구를 설정하면서 첫 작업을 시작했고, 1933년에는 전라남도를 분리하여 성골롬반외방선교회를 초청하여 맡겼다. 그는 애초에 5년의 준비 기간 후 두 감목대리구를 ‘지목구’로 설정하려고 했다. 그러나 이 시기 인적, 재정적인 어려움과 당시 한국인 사제들의 두려움과 무관심, 젊은 사제들의 일탈 등의 문제점이 발생하면서 연기하게 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 드망즈 주교는 포기하지 않고 1937년 4월에 전주지목구를 한국천주교회 최초의 현지인 자치 교구로 설립했다.

영문 초록

In 1914, Mgr. Demange established St. Justin Seminary for educating seminarians to train them for ordination to serve as diocesan priests. In so doing, furthermore, he desired to establish Indigene Church led by Korean bishops. Since 1918, St. Justin Seminary has trained Korean seminarians. Since 1919, Mgr. Demange had considered to divide the diocese. The letter sent to Mgr. Guebriant on July 12, 1923 shows Mgr. Demange’s detailed plan about dividing the diocese. According to this plan, the initial step involved dividing Jeolla Province to form a Korean Indigene Church. The subsequent step was to further divide the South Gyeongsang Province. As result of these steps, Mgr. Demange wanted to establish four Vicariates Apostolic. In order to realize this plan, Mgr. Demange communicated with Cardinal Van Rossum in a comprehensive report in September 1926. Furthermore, in his speech in 1929 in France, he emphasized the importance of training indigene priests and establishing Indigene Church. In May 1931, Mgr. Demange initiated his first task by establishing the Jeolla Vicariate foraneus. In 1933, he separated South Jeolla Province and enlisted the Missionary Society of St. Columban to oversee it. Mgr. Demange originally wants to designate the two Apostolic Prefectures as ‘Indigene Church’ after five-year’s preparation. However, this proposal was postponed due to the following challenges : lack of human resources, financial difficulties, fear and indifference many Korean priests and devation of some young priests. In spite of all the above challenges, in April 1937, Mgr. Demange established the indigene Apostolic Prefecture of Jeonju as the Korean Catholic Church’s first indigene Apostolic Prefecture.
