8-9세기 로마 성무일도의 형성과 발전

국문 초록

기도에 관한 예수님의 구체적인 가르침, 특별히 ‘끊임없이 기도하라(루카 21,36 참조)’는 명령과 ‘끈질기게 기도하라(루카 18,1 참조)’는 가르침의 실현을 위해 교회는 하루 중 같은 리듬으로 규칙적으로 반복하는 시간전례를 한결같이 거행해 오고 있다. 로마 성무일도의 역사에서 본격적인 발전의 첫 단계를 형성하는 5-6세기의 성무일도의 그 구조와 형태는 알려지지 않았고, 베네딕도 규칙서를 비롯한 수도자 전통과 혼합된 로마-베네딕도 성무일도가 7-8세기에 이르러 로마 성무일도의 전통으로 자리 잡게 되었다. 아말라리오 주교의 저술을 통해 8세기 이후 카롤링거 왕조에 도입된 이성무일도의 구조와 내용을 재구성해 보면, 이 시기의 성무일도는 이미 주교좌 성당 성무일도의 핵심 시간경인 아침기도, 저녁기도, 사제들에게 참여가 권고되었던 밤기도, 부가적으로 바쳐지던 낮 시간경, 그리고 온전히 수도자 전통의 요소였던 일시경과 끝기도가 결합된 구조를 나타낸다. 따라서 이미 이 시기에 제2차 바티칸 공의회의 개혁 이전까지 유지되던 ‘교회의 기도’의 시간경의 형태가 갖춰졌음을 볼 수 있다. 이 로마-베네딕도 성무일도는 시편의 배열이나 찬미가를 도입하지 않는 점, 그리고 마침기도를 유지하는 점 등 자신의 본래의 특징적인 요소들을 어느 정도 간직하고 있으면서도, 전체적으로 수도자 전통의 틀을 수용하였다. 1주간 주기의 시편 읽기나 밤기도, 저녁기도 때의 연속적인 시편 낭송은 고유한 수도 전통에서 채택된 요소로 이후에도 변함없이 로마 성무일도의 특징으로 자리매김하였다. 한편, 이 시기의 성무일도는 다양하고 복잡한 봉사자들의 협력이 필요한 ‘예식 거행’이었다. 주교와 사제를 중심으로 하는 집전자와 성가대, 독창자, 독서자, 그 밖에 다양한 직무자들과 참여자들의 존재와 음악적 요소들은 성무일도의 공동체성을 잘 드러내며, 성무일도가 개인기도화가 되기 이전의 이 기도의 본래의 특성을 잘 보여준다. 이러한 8-9세기의 성무일도에서 나타난 공동체적 거행은 제2차 바티칸공의회가 다시금 그 중요성을 재발견하고, 신자들의 참여를 유도하면서 강조한 “교회 곧 온 신비체의 목소리(｢전례 헌장｣ 99항)”로서의 기도의 전형을 보여주었다는 점에서 의미를 지닌다. 다른 한편, 본 연구를 통해 사제들의 공동체 삶을 전제로 거행되던 이 시기 성무일도의 구성 요소가 사목자의 삶이 복잡하고 다양해지는 가운데서도 20세기까지 그대로 이어져옴을 발견하면서, 이후 제기될 사목자의 영적 양식으로서의 ‘교회의 기도’의 한계도 미리 예견하게 된다.

영문 초록

This dissertation explores the development and structure of the Roman Liturgy of the Hours, a cornerstone in the daily rhythm of Catholic prayer. And it reflects Jesus’ teachings on incessant prayer (Luke 21:36) and persistent prayer (Luke 18:1). The study traces the liturgy’s origins back to the 5th and 6th centuries where an era was not well-documented, leading to its consolidation in the 7th and 8th centuries as a mixture of Roman and Benedictine traditions. This synthesis is clear evidence in the structure of the liturgy reconstructed from the writings of Bishop Amalarius in the 8th century of the Carolingian dynasty. And its structure included key elements like morning and evening prayers, night prayers recommended for priests, additional daytime prayers, and monastic elements like the little hours and concluding prayers. The Roman-Benedictine Liturgy of the Hours retained distinctive features such as its Psalm arrangement and the absence of hymns, while integrating monastic practices like weekly Psalm recitation cycles and continuous Psalmody in evening and night prayers. These features have remained characteristic of the Roman Liturgy of the Hours. The liturgy in this era was a complex ritual requiring collaboration from various ministers, including bishops, priests, choirs, soloists, readers, and other participants. This communal aspect, along with musical elements, highlights the communal nature of the liturgy before it evolved into a more private form of prayer. This research examines the communal nature of the 8th and 9th century Liturgy of the Hours, aligning with the Second Vatican Council’s rediscovery of its importance and emphasis on lay participation as “the voice of the Church as the entire holy body”(Sacrosanctum Concilium 99). In addition, this study predicts the challenges in the spiritual formation of clergy as the components of this liturgy, originally intended for a communal clerical life, continued unchanged into the 20th century amidst increasing complexity and diversity in pastoral life.
