原泉 全八顧의 삶과 저항 정신

국문 초록

본 연구는 居昌郡 加祚縣 泉泉里[현 原泉里]에 살면서 壬亂 前後 시기에 활동한 原泉 全八顧(1540~1612)의 삶과 저항 정신을 고찰한 것이다. 현전하는 그의 작품은 4편뿐이므로 全八顧의 『原泉集』을 토대로, 李承(1552~1596)의 『晴暉堂實紀』, 朴汝樑(1554~1611)의 『感樹齋集』, 文緯(1555~1632)의 『茅谿集』·『茅谿日記』, 徐思遠(1550~1615)의 『樂齋日記』 등 주변인의 기록을 참조하여 전팔고의 행적을 입체적으로 조명하였다. 2장에서는 정치적 오해를 겪는 과정에서 드러난 그의 저항 정신을 살폈다. 전팔고는 기축옥사(1589)에 연루되어 옥고를 치르면서, 세상에 저작을 남기지 않겠다는 의지를 결심하고 실행하였다. 또한 이 사건을 통해 전팔고는 수우당 최영경과 교류한 名士로서 이름을 알렸다. 3장에서는 학문적 교류에서 드러난 그의 학문적 태도를 살폈다. 전팔고는 덕계 오건을 사사하고, 한강 정구·동강 김우옹·청휘당 이승·모계 문위 등의 사우들과 강학하고 도의를 연마하였다. 그리고 유학의 멸절을 경계하면서, 후학을 양성하는 처사의 삶을 살았다. 原泉亭을 중심으로 이루어진 강학 활동은 거창 및 인근 지역의 학문 풍토를 진작시키는 데 기여하였다. 4장에서는 임진왜란 당시에 드러난 그의 활동과 항전의식을 살폈다. 전팔고는 임진년(1592)의 의병 활동과 계사년(1593)의 군량 희사로 향토 수호에 크게 공헌하면서도, 명나라와 조선에서 내려진 첨지·대사헌 벼슬을 사양함으로써 자신의 진정성과 개결함을 증명하였다. 후인들은 그의 行業을 기리기 위해 1711년 龍泉祠[龍泉書院]를 건립하고, 1846년 憲宗에게 포상을 요청하였다. 이처럼 전팔고는 ‘주체적 삶의 자세’와 ‘공동체 번영을 위한 헌신’을 실천하는 삶을 살았다. 자신의 신념에 따라 결정하고 실행하는 그의 저항 정신. 그것이 바로 원천 전팔고가 후인의 기록 속에서 불후의 생명을 얻게 된 이유이며, 거창지역에 계승되는 저항 정신의 단서를 남긴 까닭이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the life and resistance spirit of Jeon Pal-go(1540~1612) who worked hard during the Imjin War, living in Cheoncheon-ri(泉泉里), which is currently called Woncheon-ri(原泉里), Gajo-hyeon(加祚縣), Geochang-gun(居昌郡), in South Korea. Since only four of his works remain today, the way he lived and his achievements were examined from various perspectives primarily on the basis of his work, 『Woncheon-jip』, and also with reference to the records of people around him, including Lee Seung(1552~1596)’s 『Cheonghwidang silgi』, Park Yeo-ryang(1554~1611)’s 『Gamsujae jip』, Moon Wi(1555~1632)’s 『Mogye jip』 and 『Mogye Ilgi』, and Seo Sa-won(1550~1615)’s 『Nakjae Ilgi』. In Chapter 2, I looked at his resistance spirit that revealed in the process of experiencing political misunderstanding. After he suffered in jail by getting involved in Act of High Treason(己丑獄事, 1589), he decided not to put out his works to the world anymore and really acted on his decision. This incident made him renowned as a personage who associated with Soowoodang Choi Young-gyeong. In Chapter 3, I looked at his academic attitude revealed in academic exchanges. Jeon Pal-go was taught by the master, Dukgye Oh Geon, and studied hard with companions, such as Hangang Jeong Gu, Donggang Kim U-ong, Cheonghwidang Lee Seung, and Mogye Moon Wi. And while being wary of the extinction of Confucianism, he lived a life of nurturing younger generations. Their associations and academic efforts based in Woncheonjeong(原泉亭) led to the formation of academic atmosphere in Geochang and nearby areas as well. In Chapter 4, I looked into his activities and resistance spirit revealed during the Imjin War. He strived hard to help defend the local areas by raising up forces in 1592, the Imjin year, and providing military supplies in 1593, the Gyesa year. But he proved his integrity and probity by refusing proposals of government posts from the Ming Dynasty and the Choseon Dynasty. So later generations built Yongcheonsa Temple[Yongcheon Seowon] to commemorate his achievements in 1711 and also asked King Heonjong(憲宗) to confer a reward. As demonstrated by the study, Jeon Pal-go had practiced great devotion for common prosperity, living an independent life, throughout his lifetime. His resistance spirit, making decisions and carrying out actions based on his own beliefs. That is the reason why Jeon Pal-go gained immortal life in the records of later generations, and why it left a trace of the spirit of resistance that has been inherited in the Geochang region.
