국문 초록

본고는 임진왜란 때 2차 진주성 싸움에서 순절한 정용의 죽음에 대한 의미를 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 인간은 누구나 삶을 원하고 죽는 것을 원하지 않는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 나라의 위난에 義를 주장하며 자신의 목숨을 초개처럼 버린 인물들을 통해 그 죽음을 되새겨 보는 작업은 그 죽음을 제대로 평가하기 위한 작업이라는 점에서 의의가 있다. 거창 출신의 義士 정용은 벼슬하지 않은 신분으로 나라를 위해 반드시 죽어야 할 의리는 없지만, 대대로 국은을 입은 사족의 후예이기 때문에 국은을 저버릴 수 없다고 하며 진주성의 함락과 함께 생을 마감하였다. 이러한 정용의 죽음은 국가의 위난 앞에 자신의 목숨을 돌보지 않는 절의의 모범을 보였다는 점과 면면히 이어오는 거창 절의 정신의 단서를 잇는 동시에 절의의 전통을 드리웠다는 점에서 의미가 있으며 이는 향후 거창이 수많은 節義之士를 배출할 수 있는 원동력이 되었다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article is intended to examine the meaning of the death of Jeong Yong, who was martyred in the second Jinjuseong battle during the Japanese invasions of Korea. Everyone wants life and no one wants to die. Nevertheless, the significance of reflecting on the death through the characters who threw away their lives like stubble while insisting on righteousness in the face of the country's peril is that it is an effort to properly evaluate that death. Jeong Yong, from Geochang, was a non-government official and had no obligation to die for the country, but he said he could not abandon the national favor because he was a descendant of a noble family who had received national favor for generations, and ended his life with the fall of Jinjuseong Fortress. Jeong Yong's death is significant in that he set an example of fidelity by not caring for his own life in the face of national danger, and that he continued the spirit of fidelity in Geochang that has continued to be maintained and at the same time established a tradition of fidelity. It can be said that it became the driving force to produce a wise man.
