불이적(不二的) 종교 대화 방법론

국문 초록

본 논문은 오늘날 종교 대화가 답보를 면치 못하고 오히려 상호 부정과 배척으로 종국엔 갈등과 전쟁으로까지 극렬화되는 현상의 주된 원인이 타종교를 대상화하고 실체화하는 주객분별의 유적(有的) 패러다임에 있음을 성찰하고, 고유의 특수성을 지닌 각각의 유적 종교들이 주체와 주체로서 그 근저에서 만나 융합할 수 있는 가능 기반을 불교의 무적(無的) 사유에서 통찰하고 패러다임의 확장을 시도한다. 이를 위해, 기독교의 삼위일체와 불교의 절대무(絶對無)가 공통으로 현시(顯示)하는 존재 원리인 ‘자기 부정’(self-denial)이 실효성 있는 깊이에서의 종교 대화를 위한 실천 모형이자 지향점으로서 제시될 것이다. 특히, ‘나’와 ‘너’가 타자가 아닌 ‘우리’로서 만나 ‘너’ 안에서 실현되는 참된 ‘나’를 경험하기 위해 유무(有無)의 부정(兩非)으로써 무한의 무(無)로 개방되는 ‘불이적’(不二的, advaya) 사유를 도입한다. 그러므로 이제 오늘날 제종교는 절대성을 주장하되 자신의 무성(無性)을 통렬히 자각하고 이 절대성을 유화(有化)하지 말아야 한다. 그럼으로써 각각의 종교 주체들은 개인과 사회를 구원하는 종교 본연의 역할에 충실해질 수 있으며, 상호 이해와 인정을 기반으로 한 깊이에서의 대화를 이어갈 수 있게 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper reflects on the underlying cause of why the inter-religious dialogue today remains at a standstill and has even escalated into conflicts and eventually wars. To this end, an exploration of the concept of ‘nothingness’(無) in Buddhism will be attempted, where each ‘substantial’(有的) religion, with its unique characteristics, can be encountered on a subject and subject level. This approach aims to overcome the limitations of the ‘substantial’ paradigm, which tends to objectify and substantiate other religions. In this progress, ‘self-denial’, which reveals the ontological nature of the Trinity and Absolute Nothingness(絶對無), will be presented as a practical model to pursue for deep and effective inter-religious dialogue. In short, for the substantial ‘I’ and ‘you’ to encounter each other on a dimension of nothingness and expand into the infinite ‘we’ of nothingness, the ‘non-dual’(不二的, advaya) concept of Mahayana Buddhism should be adopted as a methodological thought. This is because the possibility of realizing true happiness, which can only be achieved in the context of the perichoretic relationship with ‘others’, is based on the thought of ‘non-duality’, which takes ‘dual-denial’(兩非) as a means for the practice of humility and sacrificial love. Likewise, the initiation of true inter-religious dialogue can also be accomplished through this ‘non-dual’ love of ‘self-denial’.
