국문 초록

본 연구는 기존의 대기업 중심의 ESG접근 방식에서 벗어나 스타트업에 적용할 수 있는 ESG 지표 개발과 도출된 지표의 중요성 및 스타트업 성과의 관련성을 검증하는데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 국내외 ESG 환경분석 및 선행연구를 고찰하고, 스타트업을 위한 ESG지표 개발을 진행함과 동시에 AC(액셀러레이터) 및 VC(벤처캐피탈) 등의 창업투자자를 대상으로 한 계층화 분석(Analytic Hierarchy Process, AHP)을 통해 지표의 종합적인 중요도 순위를 도출하였다. 연구결과, 제1수준의 중요도 평가결과에서 지배구조(G), 사회(S), 환경(E) 순으로 높게 나타났으며, 제2수준의 환경 내 하위 지표에서는 <환경경영전략과 방침>, <환경친화적 생산>, <폐기물 오염물질 배출> 순으로 중요도가 높게 나타났고, 지배구조(G) 내 하위 지표에서는 <지배구조 관리>, <주주권리보호>, <윤리경영 및 감사기구> 순으로 나타났다. ESG지표의 종합적인 중요도 순위(제3수준)에는 <지배구조 법 규제 위반>, , <배당정책 및 이행>, <감사기구의 전문성>, <윤리경영 위반사항 공시> 순으로 높게 나타났다. 도출된 ESG지표와 스타트업 성과 및 업종(제조업 및 비제조업) 간 관련성을 확인하기 위해 스타트업 78개를 대상으로 투자여부 및 업종을 기준으로 독립표본 T검증을 진행한 결과, 투자를 받은 기업의 경우 <인권보호 / 결사의 자유보장>, <제품안전>, <사회 법/규제 위반>, <협력사ESG경영>, <협력사공급망관리>, <이사회안건처리>, <주주총회수집 및 개최>, <감사기구의 전문성> 등에서 통계적으로 유의하게 높게 나타났다. 제조업종의 경우 <온실가스배출량 검증>, <에너지(재사용)비율>, <폐기물 배출량>, <환경 법/규제 위반> 등에서 비제조업에 비해 높은 수준에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 투자자 관점에서 스타트업 ESG평가 지표 중 지배구조(G)를 중요하게 인식하고 있다는 것을 의미하며, 현 상황에서 환경(E) 요소를 제조업이 아닌 타 업종에 적용하기에는 한계가 있다는 점을 보여주는 것이다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 토대로 스타트업의 ESG경영을 위한 지표개발의 의미와 방향성 및 향후 연구 방향을 도출하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to develop ESG indicators applicable to startups and test their relevance to startup performance. To develop ESG indicators for startups, we reviewed domestic and international ESG environmental analysis and prior research, and derived a comprehensive importance ranking of indicators through AHP analysis of startup investors. The results show that the first level of importance is governance(G), followed by social(S) and environmental(E). The sub-indicators within the second level of environment are “Environmental Management Strategy and Policy”, “Environmentally Friendly Production”, and “Discharge of Waste Pollutants”, in order of importance, Within Governance(G), the sub-indicators were “Governance Management”, “Shareholder Rights Protection”, and “Ethical Management and Audit Organization”. The overall importance ranking of ESG indicators(Level 3) was high in the following order: “Violation of governance laws and regulations”, “ESG management and information disclosure”, “Dividend policy and implementation”, “Professionalism of the audit organization”, and “Disclosure of ethical management violations”. To confirm the relationship between the derived ESG indicators and startup performance and industry(manufacturing and non-manufacturing), independent sample T-test was conducted on 78 startups based on investment status and industry. In the case of companies that received investment, it was statistically significantly higher in “Human Rights Protection/Association Freedom Guarantee”, “Product Safety”, “Social Law/Regulation Violation”, “Company ESG Management”, “Company Supply Chain Management”, “Board Agenda Handling”, “Shareholders' Meeting Collection and Hosting”, and “Expertise of Audit Organization>”. In the case of the manufacturing industry, there was a statistically significant difference at a higher level compared to the non-manufacturing industry in “Verification of greenhouse gas emissions”, “Energy(reuse) ratio”, “Waste emissions”, and “Violation of environmental laws/regulations”. These results mean that governance (G) is recognized as important among startup ESG evaluation indicators from an investor's perspective, and show that there are limitations in applying environmental (E) factors to industries other than manufacturing in the current situation. will be. Based on these research results, we aim to derive the meaning and direction of indicator development for ESG management of startups and future research directions.
