근대 조선사절단의 대양항해와 해양문명 관련 연구자료 관견(管見)

국문 초록

개항 이후 조선 정부는 외교적인 목적 달성과 근대문물을 배우기 위해 다양한 외교 사절단을 해외로 파견하였다. 이 연구는 개항 직후 조선에서 일본과 구미로 몇 차례 파견한 조선 사찰단 - 수신사(修信使), 조사시찰단(朝士視察團), 보빙사, 박정양, 민영환, 이재각, 김만수 사절단 등 -의 여행기를 분석해 해양 문명관을 소개하고자 한다. 조선 사절단의 여행기 중에는 윤선 내부의 구조와 항행방식, 대양항해에 대한 기억, 풍랑을 만나거나 등대를 본 경험, 항구와 항만에 대한 감상, 해군과 조선업 시찰, 동북아 해방(海防)과 만국공법 등 다양한 기록들을 찾을 수 있다. 사절단들은 대양과 대륙을 횡단하는 과정에서 이용한 증기선과 기차는 놀라운 속도로 교통 시간을 단축함으로써 장거리 여행에서 새로운 문화공간을 경험하였다. 이 시기 서양을 여행하고, 체험한다는 것은 다른 시공간과 대면하는 경험일 뿐만 아니라, 중국을 대신해 문명의 표준으로 부상하고 있던 서양에 대한 지식을 축적하는 과정이기도 했다.

영문 초록

After opening its port, the Joseon government dispatched diplomatic missions to overseas countries for achieve diplomatic purposes and to learn about modern civilization. This study aims to deal with the view of marine civilization by introducing a travelogue of parties - Susinsa, Courtier’s observation mission, Bobingsa, Park Jeong-yang, Min Yeong-hwan, Lee Jae-gak, Kim Man-su missions - dispatched several times from Joseon to Japan, America, and Europe immediately after the opening of port. The travelogue of the Korean mission, various records such as the internal structure of the steamship and method of navigation, memory of ocean voyage, experience of wind and waves or seeing a lighthouse, impression of port and harbor, observation of navy and shipbuilding industry, liberation of Northeast Asia and public law of all nations can be found. Korean mission experienced a new cultural space in long-distance travel by shortening traffic time with surprising speed by steamboat and train they used while crossing the Ocean and Continent. Traveling and experiencing the West at the time was an experience of facing different and was also a process of accumulating knowledge of the West, which was emerging as the standard of civilization in replacement of China.
