국문 초록

6ㆍ25전쟁기간 동안 한국 해군에 대한 연구는 주로 전투사 위주로 전개되어 왔다. 함정을 어떻게 획득하고 정비하여 운영했는지는 연구가 부족한데, 이것은 전쟁을 수행하는데 필요한 가장 중요한 문제 중 하나이다. 한국 해군은 광복된 지 3개월 후인 1945년 11월 11일 해방병단(海防兵團)으로 설립되었으며, 삼군 중에서 가장 먼저 창설된 군이다. 1946년 6월 15일에는 조선해안경비대(朝鮮海岸警備隊)로 개칭되었다. 그러다가 1948년 8월 15일 대한민국 정부가 수립된 후부터는 그 명칭이 해군(海軍)으로 바뀌어 정규군의 모습을 띄게 되었다. 한국 해군은 창설된 후 2년 10개월 간 미군정의 통제 하에 있었으며, 정부수립으로 정규 해군이 된 지 1년 10개월 만에 6·25전쟁이 발발했다. 한국 해군은 함정과 무기를 중심으로 한 전투력은 물론 정비와 운영 체제도 미처 구축하기도 전에 전쟁을 수행해야 했다. 본고는 한국 해군이 6ㆍ25전쟁 기간 동안 어떻게 활동했는지 해군력의 중요한 중심축 중 하나인 함정을 중심으로 규명하는 것을 목적으로 삼고 있다. 연구방법으로는 먼저 전쟁 이전의 상황을 간단히 살펴 본 후, 전쟁 기간 동안 함정을 어떻게 획득했고, 획득한 함정을 어떻게 운용하고 정비했는지를 통해 한국해군력의 변화를 규명하는 방법을 택했다. 한국해군이 창군기의 상황을 벗어나지 못한 상태에서 6ㆍ25전쟁을 맞이했는데, 본고는 한국 해군이 이 최악의 상황을 어떻게 극복하고 해군력을 어떻게 발전시켜갔는지 그 일단을 엿볼 수 있는 기회를 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Research on the Korean Navy during the Korean War has been focused mainly on naval battles. How ships were acquired, maintained, and operated has yet to be studied, but it is one of the most critical issues needed to wage war. The Korean Navy was created as the Marine Defense Group(海防兵團) on November 11, 1945, three months after liberation, and was the first of the three armed forces. On June 15, 1946, it was renamed as the Korean Coast Guard(朝鮮海岸警備隊). After the Republic of Korea government was established on August 15, 1948, it became the Korean Navy. The Korean Navy was under the control of the US military government for two years and ten months after its creation, and when the Korean War broke out, it had only been 22 months since it became a regular navy. The ROK Navy had to fight the war before it could even build a combat capability with the ships and weapons and repair, maintenance, and operating systems. This paper investigates how the Korean Navy acted during the Korean War, focusing on ships, one of the crucial factors of naval power. As a research method, after briefly reviewing the situation before the war, I chose a method to identify changes in Korean naval power by examining how ships were acquired and how the acquired vessels were operated and maintained during the war. The Korean Navy faced the Korean War without breaking away from the situation of the founding period, and this paper provides an opportunity to get a glimpse of how the Korean Navy overcame this worst situation and developed its naval power.
