전라도 지역 채취 원토의 분석과 분청토 혼합 활용 연구

국문 초록

분청사기는 조선 전기에 유행하며 전국적으로 제작되었다. 분청사기의 미학적 특징 중 하나로, 화장토의 흰색과 태토의 회흑색이 대비를 이루어 그릇 표면의 귀얄, 덤벙 기법 등의 장식을 더욱부각하여 분청사기 특유의 미감을 뒷받침하는 것을 꼽을 수 있다. 현재에도 다수의 작가들이 분청사기를 제작하고 있으며, 제토 공장에서 생산되는 제품을 사용하여 태토를 준비하는 수고로움을 덜게 되었다. 그러나 시중에 판매되는 제품을 사용하였을 때, 각 개인의 분청사기 작품 색상이 획일화되는 양상이 나타난다. 앞의 현상을 모면하고 색상이 차별화되는 분청사기 작품을 제작하는 방안의 일부로, 자연에 산재된 산화철 함량이 높은 원토를탐색하고 사용하는 것을 고려할 수 있다. 그러나 기물 제작에 필요한 가소성, 내화도 등의 조건을 완벽히 충족시키는 원토를 탐색하고 대량으로 수급하는 것은 까다로운 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제점을 해소하기 위하여 기존 원토와 시판 제품을 혼합하여 활용함으로써 채취된원토의 실용성을 향상시키는 방법을 모색하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 원토 탐색지역으로는 무등산 충효동 일대 발굴조사로 인하여 대량으로 분청사기가 출토된 전라도로 선정하였다. 이를 근거로 분청사기를 제작할 수 있는 원토가 다량 산재되어 있을 것으로판단하였으며, 무등산 충효동 요지와 인접한 위치의 전남 광주 매곡동의 답사를 통해 원토를 채취하였다. 채취 후 정제한 원토와 시판되고 있는 분청토의 XRF, 색채색차계, SEM-EDS 분석과 수축률 실험을 통하여 발색, 가소성, 수축률 등을 비교 분석하였으며, 이를 기반으로 차별화된 색상과 분청사기 기물 제작에 적합한 물성을 갖춘 원토와 분청토의 혼합 비율을 도출하였다.

영문 초록

Buncheong wares produced nationwide were popular in the early Joseon Dynasty. Buncheong wares decorated with various techniques by region were excavated and studied. These wares are characterized by the patterns on the white slip surface of the bowl, based on natural objects depicted with bold omissions, and the free, illustrative nature of the gwiyal and dumbung techniques. In addition, the contrast between the color of the white slip and the gray-black of the a clay body enhances the surface decoration on the bowl and strengthens the aesthetic sense unique to Buncheong wares. Buncheong wares were produced at government kilns and a few civilian kilns across the country, and the colors of the a clay body differ by soil composition at the place of production. Modern technology has reduced the difficulty of a clay body production with various products on the market from clay production factories. Although many artists produce Buncheong ware today, they use market products with few exceptions, making the colors similar across artists working in different areas. This aspect of production homogenizes the colors of the pieces. Not only are market products convenient, but it is also a reality that urban development has made it difficult to collect and use original soil from each region’s local area. Nevertheless, this study explores the original soil that may be used for the distinct colors of the Buncheong ware and the possible uses of such soil. The area chosen for the original soil explanation was Jeolla-do, where many Buncheong wares were unearthed from the Mudeungsan chunghyo-dong area excavation. Original soil from the nearby hills was collected in a field investigation, and a XRF, colorimetry, SEM-EDS, and shrinkage experiments, we compared the coloration, plasticity, and shrinkage of the original soil and commercially available buncheong clay, and based on this, we derived a mixing ratio of original soil and buncheong clay with differentiated colors and properties suitable for making buncheong ware.
