판소리계 소설 속 하층여성의 烈에 대한 인식과 그 의미

국문 초록

판소리계 소설은 조선후기의 사회상을 잘 드러내 주고 있는 문학 갈래로서, 특히 당대 하층민들의 생생한 삶의 모습을 반영하고 있다는 데에 의미가 크다. 본고에서는 그 가운데서도 특히 ‘하층 여성’의 ‘烈’ 관념을 경제적인 측면에 초점을 맞추어 논의를 해 나갔다. 먼저, 많은 작품 가운데 <춘향전>의 춘향, <게우사>의 의양, <변강쇠전>의 옹녀, <장끼전>의 까투리, <심청전>의 뺑덕어미를 논의의 대상으로 삼아 그들이 작품 속에서 보여주고 있는 烈에 대한 인식을 살펴보았다. 춘향이나 의양의 경우는 기녀의 신분으로서 부유한 여성에 속하고, 나머지 세 인물은 미천한 신분임과 동시에 극빈층에 속한다. 같은 하층 여성이라는 공통점을 지니고 있으면서도 그들이 烈을 인식하고 있는 방식에서는 차이가 있는 것이다. 다음으로는 이러한 인물들이 드러내는 양상을 바탕삼아 그것이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 살펴보았다. 먼저 경제적 능력을 확보한 기녀의 경우, 烈은 평범한 여성으로서의 삶에 편입하여 살아나가기 위한 하나의 수단으로 인식되고, 그 바탕에는 경제적인 능력이 뒷받침되어 있기 때문인 가능한 것으로 보인다. 반면, 빈민 유랑 여성들에게 烈은 최소한의 인간으로서의 삶의 요건이 갖추어진 이후에야 고려해 봄직한 허무한 것으로 인식되고 있다. 그러한 점들은 모두 조선 후기 민중들이 烈 관념을 받아들이는 방식이 다름에서 기인한 결과로 볼 수가 있으며, 판소리계 소설에서 특히 이러한 면모가 잘 드러나고 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Pansori novels is literature that well reveals the aspects of society in the latter period of Chosun, and it has its particular meaning in that it reflects the aspects of low class people’s lives in that period vividly. Among those, this article is going to discuss especially the low class women’s notion of ‘yeol (烈)’ mainly. First of all, among many different works, this study takes as its subjects of discussion Chunhyang in , Uiyang in , Ongnyeo in , the hen pheasant in , and bbanggeokeomi in to examine their recognition of ‘yeol’ exhibited in those works. Chunhyang or Uiyang is a gisaeng and belongs to the rich class whereas the rest three characters are of humble condition and belong to the severely poor class. Although they are low class women commonly, the way that they recognize ‘yeol’ seems to be different. Next, the researcher examines the aspects that those characters exhibit and what it means based on that. First of all, about gisaeng securing financial ability, ‘yeol’ is a means to let them lead a life as an ordinary woman, and it seems that in the background, their financial ability supports it. Meanwhile, to women who are poor and nomadic, ‘yeol’ is something that they may ignore on account of their status characteristics, and it is regarded as something vain that may be considered only after the least life conditions as a human being are satisfied. All these points can be seen as the results attributed to the fact that the contemporaries in the latter period of Chosun accepted the notion of ‘yeol’ differently, and it can be said that in pansori novels, this kind of aspect is particularly well shown.
