판소리에 대한 엇갈린 인식과 대중화의 향방

국문 초록

본고를 작성하게 된 취지는 ‘글로벌 시대’의 판소리에게 주어진 과제와 전망을 검토하는 것이었다. 그러나 필자는 ‘글로벌 시대’보다 ‘멀티미디어 시대’라는 개념을 먼저 떠올렸다. 그 이유는 판소리의 세계적 수요를 논하기 이전에, 판소리가 현대의 국내 대중에게 보다 친근해질 수 있는 방도를 먼저 궁구해야 할 것이라 여겼기 때문이다. 현대 판소리의 연행 환경을 집약적으로 설명할 만한 개념을 멀티미디어라 본 것이다. 판소리의 세계적 경쟁력이나 대중성에 대한 그간의 평가는 다소 거칠고 과장된 감이 있었다. 국내외에서 중요한 문화유산으로 지정하고 있으나, 그것이 대중성을 담보하는 것은 아님에도 단지 그 위상에만 취한 감이 없지 않다. 신영희와 박동진, 영화 <서편제> 등을 통해 판소리가 대중과 가까워졌다고도 하지만, 아직도 판소리를 전통음악의 다른 가창 장르들과 정확히 구분하여 인식하는 대중조차 그리 많지 않은 것으로 보인다. 이에 본고에서는 판소리와 판소리 콘텐츠의 대중화를 위한 방안을 크게 세 가지 방향에서 제시해보았다. 우선 판소리의 대중화 방안으로는 개방적인 콘텐츠라는 장점을 활용하고, 공연 공간의 최적화를 이루어, 현대 대중과 소통하기 위해 노력해야 할 것으로 보았다. 창극의 대중화를 위한 방안으로는 서사적 단순성을 극복하고, 고전의 가치를 전달하는 방식에 변화를 기할 것을 제안했다. 마지막으로 무형문화재 제도 운용의 유연화와 함께 연창자들의 활동 기반이 일찍부터 보장되어야 함을 강조했다. 그런데 필자는 정작 멀티미디어 환경을 어떻게 활용할 것인지에 대한 논의는 구체적으로 전개하지 못했다. 왜냐하면 거기에는 현장론적 검증이 동반되어야 하기 때문이다. 다만 지금 강조하고 싶은 것은, 판소리가 아직은 멀티미디어 환경 전반에 전방위적으로 진입하려는 시도를 계속해야 할 단계에 있다는 것이다. 그것이 가능하려면 판소리에 관계된 모든 사람들의, 실험과 실천이 무엇보다 필요하다. 공공기관이나 거대 미디어 생산자들의 지원이 제도적으로 뒷받침되어야 하며, 명창급 연창자들이 실험적 연행의 전면에 나설 필요가 있다. 또한 어릴 때부터 전통문화를 익숙하게 접할 수 있는 교육적 기반으로 마련하는 일도 매우 중요하다.

영문 초록

I aimed at examining the challenges and prospects of Pansori given to “Global Era” in this paper. The reason why I took note of “the Age of Multimedia” instead of “Global Era” is, I thought, that there is necessity to find out a way how Pansori can be a more familiar art form to the modern domestic public, before discussing the global demand of Pansori. I think “Multimedia” can be proposed as the most intensive concept for illustrating the environmental status of modern Pansori performances. It seems to me that Pansori has been evaluated somewhat exaggeratedly as well as uncarefully in terms of it's global competitiveness and popularity. It was designated as an important cultural heritage at home and abroad, but it is likely that this fact depends on not the popularity but the honor of Pansori. One might say that Pasori has been appealed successfully to the masses' taste through those works, such as Shin Yeong-hee, Park Dong-jin, and , but regardless of this tendency, it is not the common perception which distinguishes Pansori from other traditional singing art forms exactly. Hence, I suggested the plans for the popularization of the content of Pansori and Pansori itself as follows; Firstly, Pansori should take advantage of it's strong point, “flexible content.” and should strive to communicate with the modern masses through to optimize the performance spaces. Secondly, the creators of Chang-geuk(唱劇) have to do their best to avoid the simplicity of the narrative, and should make variations the ways of conveying it's classical value. Finally, I emphasized that not only the system of intangible cultural assets has to be operated flexibly, but also the infrastructure of Pansori artists should be officially guaranteed from their youth. Frankly, I feel like pinpointing that I could not specifically actualize the ideas about how to take advantage of the multimedia environment for the popularization of Pansori. It is because the field theory cannot be verified with ease in each case. It can be said that, however, Pansori is now in the process that must continue to attempt to enter in all directions throughout the multimedia environment. In order to make it possible, experiments and practices of all the people involved in the field of Pansori are required. Additionally, institutional support of the public authorities and the cooperation of a mega-media producers need to be actualized systematically, and excellent artists also need to experiment actively some new styled works. Finally, it is important as well that the educational infrastructure has to be secured for generalization of the traditional culture since a nation's childhood.
