박초월 바디 <수궁가>의 형성과정 재검토

국문 초록

현재 가장 왕성한 전승력을 보이는 박초월 바디 <수궁가>의 형성과정에 관한 학계의 주된 인식은 유성준-정광수-박초월로 이어지는 단선적인 계보였다. 기존의 박초월 바디 <수궁가>의 형성과정에 관한 연구는 유성준 바디 <수궁가> 즉, 정광수, 임방울, 박초월의 <수궁가>의 사설과 음악구조 중심의 비교 연구방법 외에 새로운 관점에서 접근해야 할 필요성을 갖게 되었다. 즉, 박초월 바디 <수궁가>의 형성과정은 박초월 명창을 비롯한 중요무형문화재 예능보유자 1세대들의 교육환경과 학습방법 양상들을 이해하는 데서부터 새롭게 접근하였다. 박초월(1917~1983)이 학습하던 시기인 20세기 전반기의 판소리 학습양상은 오늘날과는 큰 차이가 있다. 즉, 박초월이 판소리를 학습하던 시기는 소리책(창본)이 없어 사설이 정형화되어 있지 않았다는 점, 한 스승에게 한 바탕을 오롯이 전수하지 않고 여러 명창의 대목 소리들을 수용하여 자기화하였다는 점, 바탕소리를 온전히 배우기보다는 도막소리 위주로 학습하였다는 점, 독공 등의 오랜 수련 과정을 통해 자기의 예술세계를 구축하였다는 점, 일정한 교육시설인 학원을 통해서 집중적으로 학습하기보다는 유랑단체 생활을 통해 공연하면서 학습하기도 하였다는 점, 녹음기나 음반 영상 등의 학습도구가 없어 즉흥성이 강하였다는 점, 남의 소리를 많이 듣고 수용하는 이른바 ‘귀도둑질’을 많이 하였다는 점이다. 이렇듯 중요무형문화재 예능보유자 1세대들의 판소리 학습양상을 고려할 때, 박초월 바디 <수궁가>의 형성 과정은 유성준류 <수궁가>의 큰 흐름 속에서 어느 한 선생에게만 오롯이 학습하기보다는 유성준, 정광수, 임방울 등 여러 스승으로부터 두루 소리를 전수받아 영향을 받았다. 이후 스승들로부터 배운 가락을 자신의 역량에 맞게 창조적으로 바꿔 나가는 독공 등의 수련과정을 겪으면서 소리의 음악 속을 터득하게 되고 자기 나름의 재해석과 통합된 소리로 자신의 음악적 역량과 특성이 두드러지는 예술세계를 구축하여 새로운 바디의 <수궁가>를 형성하였다.

영문 초록

The main academic recognition on the process of Sugung-ga formed by Park Chowol's badi(group), which has currently seemed to be the most actively handed down, is linear genealogy that it was originated from Yoo Sungjun and was passed down to Jeong Gwangsu, and then to Park Chowol. As the previous studies have largely focused on comparative researches on the Saseol and musical structure of Sugung-ga by Jeong Gwangsu, Lim Bangwool, and Park Chowol, all of whom belong to the Yoo Sungjun's mega badi(group), this study aims to reconsider the formation process of Park Chowol badi(group)'s Sugung-ga from a new perspective. That is, to understand the formation process of Park Chowol body's Sugung-ga, we have examined the educational environment and learning methods which were given to the first generation, designated as holders of important intangible cultural properties including a Pansori master, Park Chowol. The learning methods in the first half of the 20th century when Park Chowol (1917~1983) studied Pansori were totally different from today's learning patterns. That is, as Pansori books called Changbon did not exist in that period in which she studied Pansori, Saseol could not be standardized. In addition, as pupils did not acquire a whole round of Pansori from only one master, they had to take over some parts called Daemok-sori from many masters and adapt what they learned into their own styles. It indicates that they had to learn and acquire Domak-sori, some parts of Pansori, rather than be handed over the whole round of Pansori called Batang-sori. They formulated their own artistic styles either through self-training and self-practice for long periods of time or through many live performances in wandering bands rather than intensive learning at formal educational facilities. Since there were no teaching and learning tools such as tape-recorders, LPs, and CDs, improvisation played an important role in teaching and learning Pansori, and learning by carefully listening to others' sounds, so-called 'ear-theft' was also very important to acquire skillful sounds. When considering the learning aspects of the first generation Pansori singers, holders of important intangible cultural properties, we can conclude that Park Chowol badi(group)'s Sugungga was influenced and handed down by a variety of masters such as Yoo Sungjun, Jeong Gwangsu, and Lim Bangwool, not by only one teacher. Since then, Park Chowol had continued to creatively change what she learned from many teachers into her own style through constant self-training. Finally, she established her own artistic view with unified sounds she interpreted, which caused her to formulate her own badi Sugung-ga.
