국문 초록

이 글은 남성 필진에 의해 주도된 여성 잡지 『부인』, 『신여성』의 여성 범죄 관련 기사가 주요 독자층인 여학생을 효과적으로 통제하려는 전략 하에 구성 및 편집되었음을 확인하였다. 『부인』과 『신여성』의 여성 범죄 기사는 대부분 구여성의 범죄를 다룬다. 사건보도 형식의 기사는 구여성의 범죄 사건을 놀라울 만큼 전근대적인 사건으로 소개하고, 논설문은 범죄에 내몰린 구여성의 무지함을 강조함으로써 구여성 범죄자를 흥미와 계몽의 대상으로 타자화한다. 하지만 여성의 죄에 대한 논의는 여학생이 도덕적 규범을 위반하지 않도록 강제하기도 한다. 여학생은 여학생의 외양을 하고서 밀매음, 사기 등의 범죄를 저지르는 가장(假裝)여학생과 자신을 구분하기 위해 사회가 ‘죄’로 규정하는 성적･물적 욕망을 억누르고, 사회가 만든 ‘여학생다움’에 부합하고자 스스로를 검열하고 통제한다. 여학생을 사회에 이바지하는 바람직한 여성이 되도록 통제하려는 여성 잡지의 기획과 전략 속에서, 여학생과 구여성 범죄자의 대립적 구도는 여학생의 사회적 역할을 확대하기보다는 여성계 내부의 갈등과 분열을 통해 여성에 대한 남성의 우위를 공고히하기 위해 활용되었다.

영문 초록

This article confirmed that the articles related to women’s crime in the women’s magazines Women and New Women, led by male writers, were edited under a strategy to effectively control their primary readership, female students. The women’s crime articles in Women and New Women mostly deal with crimes committed by the old-fashioned women. The article in the form of case reporting introduces the criminal case of the old-fashioned woman as a surprisingly pre-modern case, while the opinion pieces emphasize the ignorance of these female criminals, thus objectifying them as subjects of interest and enlightenment. However, these discussions about women’s crimes also serve to enforce moral norms upon female students. Female students differentiate themselves from pseudo-female students by assuming the appearance of the ideal female student, suppressing their sexual and material desires that society defines as “sin”, and censoring and controlling themselves in order to become the desirable students society expects them to be. Within the strategies aimed at controlling and molding female students into desirable women who contribute to society, the confrontational structure between female students and female criminals was used to solidify men’s dominance over women through conflicts and divisions within the female community.
