국문 초록

조선시대 팔도는 위치에 따라 역할을 부여받았다. 충청도 방어선은이미 1차 접전을 치른 뒤에 만나는 2차 거점이었다. 민정적 성격의 거점지역에 무신을 추가로 파견하여 군정･형정까지 맡겼다. 여기에 감영･수영･병영이 더해져 충청도의 핵심지역으로 기능했다. 곧 6대 고을(충주･청주･공주･홍주･해미･보령)이 서해안부터 소백산맥까지 넓게 방어선을 구축하였고, 5개 찰방도와 연안･내륙수로로 긴밀히 연결되었다. 도의 규모를 살펴보면, 조선전기에 비해서 후기에 전결은 변화가 미미한데 반해 호구는 “인구폭발”이 일어났다. 각읍이 가파르게 성장하여중간규모가 크게 늘어났다. 이론적으로는 한 가구당 1결이상의 토지를경작할 수 있는 경지를 확보했다. 환곡･군역 역시 부담률이 낮았다. 이는 경제적 성장에 힘입어 인구･수전･제언･장시 등이 폭증했을 뿐 아니라 대동･균역같은 세제개혁이 뒷따랐기 때문이다.

영문 초록

In Joseon Dynasty, 8 provinces were assigned a role according to theirregion. Denfence line of Chungcheong provnice was the second battlefield wewould meet after the first battle. Additionally the military was dispatched toa region governed by civil rule and took charge of the military governmentand the punishment. Province capital, Army and naval commander’s basewere added to become the core region of Chungcheong provnice. That is tosay, 6 major cities-Chungju, Cheongju, Gongju, Hongju, Haemi, Boryeongetc.-had built a wide line of defense from west sea to Sobaek Mountains. And they were closely related to 5 major land transportation networks, acoastal route and inland waterway. Looking at the financial scale of the province, compared to the 15th cen-tury, the 18th century cultivated land had changed little, but the populationexplosion occurred. As the city grew rapidly, the middle scale increasedsignificantly. Theoretically, 1 gyeol(結) of land could be cultivated for eachhousehold. The burden of hwangok(還穀) and military service(軍役) werealso low. This is not only because population, rice paddy, reservoir, marketetc exploded thanks to economic growth, but also because reforms like Dae-dong(大同) and Kyunyeok(均役) followed.
