‘걷기’의 계보로 고찰한 사실주의의 미학

국문 초록

본고는 사진과 영화의 탄생기를 중심으로 인간이 설계하였으나 그 설계를 넘어서는 방식으로 정체성을 드러낸 카메라에 주목하며 사실주의의 미학을 고찰한다. 다게레오타입의 사진은 기성 회화 작가들에 의해 선형원근법의 보조 기구로 고안된 카메라가 그들의 목적을 충족시키지 않고 ‘시점’이라는 예상치 못한 발견을 하게 했음을 보여준다. 이어 뤼미에르 형제의 <기차의 도착>은 움직임을 포착할 수 있는 동영상 카메라가 출현하였음에도 살아 움직이는 실물 그 자체는 카메라의 프레임 내부로 포착될 수 없음을 자각하게 한다. 사진을 통해서는 작가의 상대주의적 시점의 움직임을, 영화를 통해서는 살아 운동하는 세계의 움직임을 발견하게 한 카메라는 작가의 의도적인 설계로는 결코 작품을 완수시킬 수 ‘없음’을 보여준다. 필자가 카메라의 출현으로 조명하고자 하는 사실주의의 관건은 움직임이다. 움직임으로 매개된 작가와 세계 사이의 유동적인 유대감이 카메라의 출현 이후 동시대에 이르는 사실주의 예술의 생명력이다. 그런데 미학의 영역에서 이와 같은 움직임을 개념적으로 고찰하기 시작한 것은 1960년대이다. 공연예술학에서 ‘수행성’이라는 용어로 탐구된 이 움직임은 ‘유동성’이라는 개념으로 구체화된 바 있다. 본고는 이 유동성 개념에 착안하여 사진과 영화가 탄생하던 순간에 발견된 움직임의 미학을 조명한다. 특히 움직임의 형식이 ‘걷기’라는 행위로 구현됨에 주목한다. 걷기는 벤야민이 ‘플라뇌르(flâneur)’를 호명한 순간 다소 직접적으로 용어화된 바는 있으나 그 구체적인 미학은 제시된 바 없다. 본고는 유동성의 맥락에서 ‘걷기’라는 행위의 미학을 고찰하며 사진과 영화 탄생기에서부터 모더니즘 문학, 키에르케고르의 저작에 드러난 걷기의 의미를 거쳐 포스트드라마 연극의 수행성 개념으로 다시금 도착한다. 이렇게 20세기 전반에 걸쳐 존재해 온 비가시적인 행보였던 걷기의 계보를 추적함으로써 1960년대 이후 공연예술학에서 조명된 유동성 개념을 구체화함과 동시에 카메라의 탄생 이래 동시대에 이르기까지 축적되어 온 사실주의의 핵심적 미학과 그 궤적을 독해한다.

영문 초록

This thesis identifies the aesthetics of realism by tracing what kind of realistic experiences and discoveries were made beyond human target at the moment when photography and film were born in the 19th century. First, looking at the Daguerreotype photos, the camera, which was designed as an aid to linear perspective, goes beyond its design and confirms the context in which the artist discovered an unexpected relativistic point of view. Then, while watching by the Lumiere brothers, it sheds light on the context in which it was discovered that even though it is a video camera that can capture motion, the living object itself cannot be possessed inside the frame of the camera. Realism, which discovers the movement of the artist's relativistic point of view through photography and the movement of the living world through film, passes through the process of proving that the artist's intentional design 'cannot' complete the work. After all, the key to realism is movement. The fluid bond between the artist and the world, mediated by movement, becomes the vitality of realistic works. As an aesthetic term that illuminates movement, there is ‘performativity’ that has been suggested in performing arts studies since the 1960s. Performativity is contextualized again with the concept of ‘fluidity’, and this thesis sheds light on the aesthetics of movement discovered at the moment when photography and film were born with this concept of fluidity. In order to materialize this work, I pay attention to the act of ‘walking’. This thesis examines the aesthetics of the act of walking in the context of fluidity beyond the ‘flâneur’ suggested by Benjamin rather directly. Walking discovered during the birth of photography and film, revealed in modernism literature, Kierkegaard's writings, and then arriving again as the concept of performativity in Post-dramatic theater, the genealogy of walking that were invisible throughout the 20th century will be apprehended by the aesthetics of realism.
