한중 청년세대 SF영화의 현주소

국문 초록

<승리호>와 <유랑지구>는 비슷한 시기에 비슷한 연령대의 감독들이 만들었고 한중 양국에서 우주를 배경으로 한 최초의 SF 영화라는 의미를 지니고 있지만 두 영화는 제작 동기와 제작과정 등이 서로 달랐다. 하지만 두 영화는 공교롭게도 모두 지구를 멸망으로부터 구하는 플롯을 가지고 있으며, 이 ‘구함’의 과정에서 영웅적 인물들이 활약하는 일종의 영웅 서사 구조를 가지고 있다는 점에서는 유사하다. 유사한 플롯과 서사구조를 가지고 있지만, 캐릭터와 스토리텔링에서 두 영화는 서로 다른 면모를 보여준다. 따라서 본고는 두 영화의 캐릭터와 스토리텔링에서 나타나는 유사점과 차이점을 비교 대조하여 이러한 차이가 나타나는 원인을 분석하고, 더 나아가 한중 청년세대 SF영화의 현주소를 고찰하였다. <승리호>와 <유랑지구>는 캐릭터 설정에서 전형성과 비 전형성을 띠고 있다. 특히, 두 영화는 영웅 캐릭터의 설정과 여성 캐릭터 역할에 있어서 차이를 갖고 있지만, 반전과 성장을 보이는 캐릭터를 설정하고 보호받는 자, 구원자이자 창조자를 여성으로 설정하고 있다는 측면에서는유사한면모를가지고있다. 또한, 두영화는이분법적서사구조의설정, 가족주의와 영웅주의적 가치관, 사회와 정치 문제의 반영 등 스토리텔링에서 기존 영화들에서 보여줬던 클리셰들이 반복되고 변주하는 면모를 보인다. <승리호>와 <유랑지구>는 할리우드 SF영화의 제작 시스템을 모방하여 원천 IP를 구축하고 여러 매체를 통한 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링을 시도했다. 그 과정에서 <승리호>는 자본주의 체제의 시장경제 원리를 따라 제작되었지만, <유랑지구>는 사회주의 체제의 상명하달식 문화사업의 변형인 중국 정부의 문화 정층설계의 연장선에서 제작되었고 이 때문에 범주선율 영화의 성격을 띠고 있다. 두 영화의 제작배경과 제작과정의 근본적 다름은 영화의 주제의식, 후속작의 제작, 한중 SF영화의 미래 예측에도 영향을 주었다.

영문 초록

While Space Sweeper and The Wandering Earth have something in common that were made by directors of similar ages around the same time and have the distinction of being the first science fiction films set in space in both Korea and China, the two films have different motivations and production processes. However, they are similar in that they both have a plot about saving the Earth from apocalypse and a heroic narrative structure in which heroic characters play a role in this process. Despite having similar plots and narrative structures, the two films show different aspects in terms of characters and storytelling. Therefore, this paper compares and contrasts the similarities and differences in the characters and storytelling of the two films to analyze the reasons for these differences, and further examines the current state of Korean and Chinese science fiction films in young generation. Space Sweeper and The Wandering Earth show both typical and untypical characterization at the same time. In particular, the two films have differences in the setting of the hero character and the role of female characters, but they are similar in that they set up characters who show reversal and growth, and set up women as the protected, saviors, and creators. In addition, the two films repeated and varied the clichés of existing films in storytelling, such as the establishment of a dichotomous narrative structure, familism and heroism, and the reflection of social and political issues. Both Space Sweeper and The Wandering Earth imitated the production system of Hollywood science fiction films to build original IP and attempt transmedia storytelling through various media. In the process, while Space Sweeper was produced according to the market economy principles of the capitalist system, The Wandering Earth was produced as an extension of the Chinese government’s cultural top-level design, a variation of socialist system’s top-down culture project, government’s top-down filmmaking and top-level design and thus has the characteristics of a main melody films in a broad sense. The fundamental differences in the production backgrounds and processes of the two films have influenced the thematic consciousness of the films, the production of their sequels, and the future prediction of Korean and Chinese science fiction films.
