북경에서 만난 조선과 서양

국문 초록

조선 시대 연행사들은 북경을 방문하여 중국인만 만난 것이 아니라 다양한 외국인들과 교류하였다. 이 연구는 그 중 조선 사신들이 만난 서양 선교사들의 조선 관련 기록을 찾는 작업이다. 연행사들은 중국 방문을 할 때 관광 차원에서 북경 천주당을 방문하는 경우가 종종 있었다. 그리고 이러한 상황을 그들의 연행록에 기록해 놓았다. 서양 선교사들과 만남은 이기지의《일암연기》, 이상봉의《북원록》, 정광충의《연행일록》, 홍대용의《담헌연기》, 서호수의《열하기유》등 다양한 연행록에 기록되어 있다. 한편 서양인들 역시 한국 관련 상황을 기록하였다. 일본과 중국에 파견되었던 서양 선교사들은 교황청이나 그들이 속한 예수회 등의 교단에 중국과 일본 관련해 정기적으로 서한을 보냈다. 그 과정에서 한국에 대한 묘사도 부수적으로 기록하곤 하였다. 18세기 조선 연행사들은 북경에 가면 일반적으로 천주당을 방문해 서양 선교사들과 교류하였다. 특히 1720년 정사인 아버지 이이명의 자제군관 자격으로 북경을 방문한 이기지는 그의 《일암연기》에 선교사와의 만남을 자세하게 기록하고 있다. 이기지는 戴進賢(Ignatius Koggler/1680-1746)과 蘇霖(Joseph Surez/1656-1736), 白晉(Joachium Bouvert/1656-1730), 張安多(Antoin de Magalhaens/ 1677-1735), 麥大成(Jean-Francois Cardoso/1676-1723), 費隱(Xavier-Ehrenbert Fridelli/1673-1743), 羅懷中(Giuseppe Da Costa/1679-1747), 雷孝思(Jean Baptiste Regis/1663-1738), 湯尙賢(Petrus V. du Torte/1669-1724), 殷弘緖(Francois-Xavier D’Entrecolles/1664-1741), 杜德美(Pierre Jartoux/1668-1720) 등의 서양 선교사와 무려 26차례에 걸쳐 서양 문물 및 천주교, 천문학 등 다양한 분야에 대해 서로 의견을 나눈다. 정광충, 이상봉, 홍대용 등 18세기 중반에 북경을 방문했던 연행사들은 주로 劉松齡(August von Hallerstein/1701-1774)과 만남을 갖고, 18세기 말 열하까지 방문했던 서호수는 湯士選(Alexandre de Gouvea/1751-1808)과 편지를 주고받기도 한다. 이들 연행사가 접촉한 서양 선교사 중 뇌효사, 유송령, 탕사선이 한국과 관련한 기록을 남긴다. 뒤 알드는 《중화제국전지》에 뇌효사가 보내온 한국의 역사 및 문화와 관련한 편지를 수록하여 당시로서는 가장 자세한 한국의 역사와 문화를 서양에 소개한다. 유송령은 자신의 동생에게 보내는 편지에서 한국과 관련된 내용을 서술한다. 탕사선은 <조선왕국에 대한 천주교의 기적적 도입 및 그 기적적 진전>이란 한국 관련 서한을 작성하기도 하였다. 이 논문에서는 조선 연행사가 북경에서 만난 서양 선교사의 한국 관련 기록을 발굴해 소개한다.

영문 초록

During the Chosôn Dynasty, Chosôn emissaries traveled to Beijing and interacted not only with Chinese people but also with various foreigners. This study seeks to find records of Western missionaries’ encounters with Chosôn. During their visits to China, the envoys often visited the Peking Catholic Church as a tourist attraction and recorded these events in their journals. There are many Western missionaries that the travelers met in China. However, there are only a few journals that detail their encounters, such as Lee Gi-ji’s Ilahm yôngi and Hong Tae-yong’s Tahmhôn yôngi. This is because most of the performers took a casual approach to meeting strange-looking people from the West, and because of language limitations. The encounters with Western missionaries are recorded in various logbooks, such as Ilahm yôngi by Lee Gi-ji, Pukwonrok by Lee Sang-bong, Yônhaeng ilnok by Jông Kwang-ch’ung, Tahmhôn yôn’gi by Hong Tae-yong, and Yôlha giyu by Sô Ho-soo. Meanwhile, Westerners also recorded their experiences about Korea. Western missionaries in Japan and China regularly wrote to the Vatican and their Jesuit orders about China and Japan, often including descriptions of Korea in the process. In the 18th century, Korean emissaries to Peking typically visited the Catholic Church and interacted with Western missionaries. In particular, Lee Gi-ji, who traveled to Beijing in 1720 as a vassal of his father, the politician Lee Yi-myông, recorded his encounters with missionaries in detail in his Ilahm yôngi. He interacted with Ignatius Koggler, Joseph Surez, Joachium Bouvert, Antoin de Magalhaens, Jean-Francois Cardoso, Xavier-Ehrenbert Fridelli, Giuseppe Da Costa, Jean Baptiste Regis, Petrus V. du Torte, Francois-Xavier D’Entrecolles, Pierre Jartoux, and other Western missionaries on a total of 26 occasions, exchanging opinions on various fields such as Western culture, Catholicism, and astronomy. Chosôn emissaries who visited Beijing in the mid-18th century, such as Chung Kwang-ch’ung, Lee Sang-bong, and Hong Tae-yong, mainly met with Hallerstein, and Sô Ho-soo, who visited until the end of the 18th century, exchanged letters with Bishop Gouvea. Among the Western missionaries with whom these emissaries came into contact were August von Hallerstein and Alexandre de Gouvea. They leave behind records about Korea. In his The Imperial Biography of China, Jean Baptiste Du Halde includes letters from Jean Baptiste Regis, providing the most detailed introduction to Korean history and culture in the West at the time. Hallerstein describes Korean in a letter to his brother. Bishop Gouvea also wrote a letter about Korea called The Miraculous Introduction of Catholicism to the Kingdom of Chosôn and Its Miraculous Progress. In this paper, I introduce the Korean-related records of Western missionaries whom Chosôn emissaries met in Peking.
