隋代의 외국 정보 수집과 『동번풍속기』

국문 초록

본고의 목적은 『수서』 신라전의 원전 중 하나인 『동번풍속기』의 편찬과 唐代 문헌의 『동번풍속기』 인용 방식을 검토하여 당시 외국에 관한 서술이 어떻게 이루어졌는지 고민해 보는 데 있다. 隋代의 외국 정보는 사신 및 상인단의 왕래에 따른 취재, 여러 典籍의 탐색 등을 통해 수집되었다. 『동번풍속기』는 이러한 과정을 거쳐 수집된 외국 정보를 토대로 편찬되었다. 그러나 『동번풍속기』에 관한 서지 정보가 전하지 않아 그 구체적인 면모는 파악하기 어렵다. 隋라는 편찬 시점, 『북번풍속기』와의 관련성, 지리류의 문헌과 유사한 성격이라는 정도만 알 수 있다. 『동번풍속기』는 여러 문헌에 逸文으로 전하는데, 각기 내용에 차이가 있다. 이에 逸文을 비교·검토하여 『동번풍속기』 기사의 대략을 제시하였다. 『동번풍속기』는 편찬자의 이해에 따라 본래 문장과 다르게 인용되었다. 『동번풍속기』를 인용한 唐代의 여러 문헌에서 그 인용 방식이 확인되는데, 신라왕의 성씨 기사, 신라와 가라의 附庸 기사가 그러하다. 이들에 관한 기사는 편찬자의 이해에 따라 일부 문장이 생략 및 개변되어 唐代의 문헌에 기록되었다. 이러한 점으로 보아 중국 문헌의 외국 서술 방식 중 하나는 주변국에 관한 정보를 취합하여 도출한 ‘타당한 이해’에 기반하여 이루어진 것이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to review the compilation of 『Dongfanfengsuji(東藩風俗記)』, one of the original Silla volumes of 『Suishu(隋書)』 and the methods of citing it in the literature of Tang, thus having contemplation over the ways of describing a foreign country. In Sui Dynasty, they collected foreign information by covering visits by envoys and merchant groups and exploring collections of writing and paintings. 『Dongfanfengsuji(東藩風俗記)』 was published based on foreign information collected in this process, but it is difficult to figure out its specific aspects due to the absence of its bibliographic data. The only concerned data includes its publication in Sui, its relations with 『Beifanfengsuji(北藩風俗記)』, and its similar nature to geography books. 『Dongfanfengsuji(東藩風俗記)』 has been passed down as an anecdote in many works of literature with some differences in content among them. The present study compared and reviewed its anecdotes and provided a rough picture of its articles. It was cited differently from its original sentences according to the interests of compilers, which can be confirmed in many works of literature that cited it during Tang. The concerned parts include articles about the family names of Silla kings and dependency of Silla and Gara. The sentences about them were partially omitted and changed according to the interests of compilers in the literature of Tang. These findings suggest that the descriptions of a foreign country in the literature of Tang were based on “valid interests” based on the collected information of neighboring countries rather than the “delivery of facts”.
