영문 초록

This study explores the neural correlates of L2 sentence comprehension, focusing on a particular syntactic operation of English topicalization and using a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging(fMRI). English constructions(i.e., topicalized sentences known to undergo syntactic movement) were presented to native Korean speakers who are highly proficient in L2 English in a visual comprehension task and compared with carefully matched control sentences. We found that topicalized sentences as compared to canonical sentences elicited increased activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus(or Broca’s area) and superior temporal gyrus, which was consistent with a previous study utilizing a native Hebrew auditory comprehension task. This finding suggests that increased proficiency brings about native-like syntactic processing.
