외국인 유학생 관련 보도 동향의 네트워크 분석

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 본격적인 외국인 유학생 유치 정책 도입 이전으로 거슬러 올라가 한국 사회에서 외국인 유학생을 어떤 시선으로 바라봤는지를 언론 보도 분석을 통해서 살펴봤다. 1990년 1월 1일부터 2022년 11월 25일까지 외국인 유학생 관련 보도기사 14,121건을 수집하여, 연결 중심성과 고유벡터 중심성이 높은 단어를 키워드로, 문서 내 단어 역빈도 지수인 TF-IDF를 기준으로 토픽을 선별하여 특징적인 시기별로 비교 분석하였다. 자료 분석 결과 외국인 유학생 유치 정책 이전에 경남 지역을 중심으로 이뤄진 의제 형성 과정을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 또한, Study Korea Project 정책 시행으로 외국인 유학생 관련 보도가 늘어나긴 했지만, 결정적으로 외국인 유학생 이슈 현저성(salience) 증가에 영향을 미친 것은 코로나-19 관련 기사임을 확인하였다. 시기별로 토픽을 분석한 결과 ‘문화와 교육의 관점’이 아닌 ‘무역과 교역의 관점’이 외국인 유학생 유치 정책 이전부터 한국 사회에서 지배적이었다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 외국인 유학생의 다양성을 존중하고 환대할 수 있도록 상호문화적 관점에 입각한 고등교육 국제화에 대한 논의를 요청하였다.

영문 초록

In this study, we explored how Korean society looked at foreign students even before the implementation of the Study Korea Project policy through a big data analysis of news trends. We collected 14,121 news articles related to foreign students from January 1, 1990 to November 25 2022, and words with high degree centrality and eigenvector centrality were labeled as keywords, and words with highest TF-IDF score were considered as topics. As a result of co-occurrence word network analysis, we examined the process of agenda formation centering on the Gyeongnam region prior to the implementation of the Study Korea Project. In addition, although news articles related to foreign students increased due to the implementation of the Study Korea Project, COVID-19 had a decisive effect on the increase in the issue salience of foreign students. As a result of analyzing the topics by three different periods, we identified that 'the perspective of international trade' was the dominant viewpoint in Korean society, rather than 'the perspective of global education'. Based on these results, an urgent call for the internationalization of higher education based on an intercultural perspective was requested to respect and welcome the diversity of foreign students.
