유관순 일가의 ‘대들보’ 소산 조화벽의 인생역정

국문 초록

조화벽은 강원도 양양감리교회 전도사 조영순과 어머니 전미흠 사이에 1895년 무남독녀로 태어났다. 부모님 영향으로 일찍부터 남녀동등권을 인식하였다. 원산 성경학원과 루씨여학교 등을 거쳐 개성 호수돈여학교 재학 중 만세운동 참여는 인생항로를 바꾸는 결정적인 계기였다. 어윤희․권애라, 조화벽 등은 3월 3일 기도회를 마치고 대오를 이루어 거리에 나섰다. 시위대는 ‘찬미가’와 ‘독립가’를 부르며 독립만세를 외쳤다. 시민들도 가세하여 시위군중은 1,000여 명으로 늘어났다. 다행히 군수와 학교 당국의 설득으로 체포된 여학생 대부분은 석방되었다. 조화벽은 원산을 거쳐 양양 대포항을 통해 고향에 돌아와 독립선언서를 전달함으로 양양 만세운동의 불씨를 당겼다. 4월 4일 양양장날에 시작된 만세운동은 5월 9일까지 군내 각지에서 전개되었다. 검거에 피한 조화벽은 호수돈여학교를 졸업한 후 공주 영명여학교 교사가 되었다. 여기에서 유관순 동생인 인석과 관석을 보살피는 한편 유우석 옥바라지도 정성을 다했다. 이러한 인연으로 부부가 된 후 호수돈여학교를 거쳐 원산 진성여학교 교사로 부임하여 다양한 활동을 펼쳤다. 바쁜 와중에도 북간도위문강연단의 내한에 즈음하여 연사로 참여했다. 해상상구회 부회장으로 해상승조원의 자구책을 위한 여러 방안을 모색하였다. 노동자 권익 향상에도 참여하는 등 사회운동에도 적극적이었다. 원산의 대표적인 석산유치원이 경영난에 직면하자 후원회원으로서 활동하는 등 민족의식을 일깨우는데 역할을 다했다. 조화벽은 1932년 다시 고향으로 돌아와 양양감리교회에서 운영하던 정명학원 교사로서 해방 직전까지 활동하였다. 해방 이후 부부는 소련군의 박해를 받다가 월남하여 서울에서 건국사업에 나섰다. 조화벽도 역시 민주화를 위한 사회활동을 이어갔다. 임영신․박마리아 등과 여성 권익옹호에 앞장섰다. 이후 서울 성북구 정릉 미아중앙교회에서 여선교회 회장으로 봉사하다가 1975년 9월 5일에 사망하였다. 정부는 1990년 건국훈장 애족장(1982년 대통령표창)을 추서했다.

영문 초록

Cho Hwa Byug, was born as a single daughter in 1895 between Cho Young Soon, a preacher at Yangyang Methodist church in Gangwon-do, and Jeon Mi Heum. Due to the influence of my parents, she recognized gender equality early on. Participation in the Manse Movement while attending Huston women school in Kaesong through Wonsan Bible academy and Lu's girls' school was a decisive opportunity to change the course of life. Eo Yun Heui, Kwon Ae Ra, and Cho Hwa Byug finished their prayer meeting on March 3 and went out to the streets in a formation. The protesters sang “Hymn” and “Independence Song” and shouted “Hurray for the independence of Korea”. Citizens joined the demonstration and the crowd increased to about 1,000. Fortunately, most of the girls who were arrested by the county governor and school authorities were released. Cho Hwa Byug returned to his hometown through Daepo Port in Yangyang through Wonsan and delivered the Declaration of Independence, sparking the Yangyang Manse Movement. The independence movement, which began on April 4 on Yangyang Market Day, was held throughout the county until May 9. Cho Hwa Byug, who avoided arrest, became a teacher at Gongju Yeongmyeong girls' school after graduating from Holston girls' school. Here, Yoo Gwan Sun's younger brothers In Seok and Gwan Seok were taken care of, while supply Y00 Woo Seok with clothes and food from outside the prison. After becoming a couple due to this relationship, she went through Holston girls' school and was appointed as a teacher at Wonsan Jinseong girls' school to carry out various activities. Even though she was busy, she participated as a speaker when band of speech form North Gando encouragement visit. As the vice-chairman of the Haesangsangguhui, she sought various measures for self-rescue measures for maritime crew members. She was also active in social movements, including participating in improving workers' rights and interests. When Wonsan's representative Seoksan kindergarten faced financial difficulties, it played a role in awakening national consciousness by working as a sponsor. Cho Hwa Byug returned to his hometown in 1932 and worked as a teacher at Jeongmyeong academy operated by Yangyang Methodist Church until just before liberation. After liberation, the couple fled South Korea after being persecuted by the Soviet army and started a national foundation project in Seoul. Harmony Wall also continued social activities for democratization. She took the lead in defending women's rights and interests with Lim Young Shin and Park Maria. Later, She served as the president of Yeoseon Church at Jeongmeung Mia Central Church in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, and died on September 5, 1975. The government awarded the Order of Patriots of the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1990.
