국문 초록

홀로코스트 교육은 제2차 대전 이후 한동안의 침묵과 금기의 영역에 갇혀 억눌린 기억으로 존재하다가 여러 가지 계기로 공적인 기억의 장으로 나왔다. 그리고 학교 교육이나 각종 기념 공간 등의 힘을 빌려 장기 기억으로 전환되고 있다. 교육과정과 교과서 서술에 홀로코스트가 반영되었으며 각종 전시·기념 시설이 건립되었다. 그리고 홀로코스트 교육 프로그램을 전문적으로 개발하는 기구들도 생겨났다. 홀로코스트 교육에는 오해와 편견, 신화가 여전히 존재하고 부정과 왜곡이 극우 세력의 성장과 함께 지속적으로 진행되고 있다. 그리고 홀로코스트가 폭력으로 점철된 사건인 만큼 정서적 부담을 고려하지 않을 수 없다. 이러한 문제들은 풀어가야 할 과제이며, 한국의 역사교육과도 연관되어 있다. 민족주의 신화에 갇혀서 교과서에 나치 독일만이 아니라 폴란드인 스스로도 가해자였다는 ‘불편한’ 사실을 반영하지 못하는 폴란드의 예처럼 베트남전의 기억처럼 가해의 진실을 막아서고 있다. 홀로코스트 부정과 왜곡은 탈진실의 시대에 더욱 심각한 문제가 되었다. ‘위안부’ 부정이나 5.18 부정 역시 우익 세력의 성장이나 정치적 극단화와 유착 관계를 맺으면서 쟁점화하기도 한다. 폭력과 인권 침해는 지식의 문제이기도 하지만 정서의 영역인만큼 세심한 고민이 필요한 영역이다. 한국 현대사에서 마주하는 폭력의 문제 역시 마찬가지이다. 홀로코스트 교육은 반유대주의, 인종주의, 차별 문제, 인권, 평화 등의 문제와 연관하여 확장적으로 접근하려는 시도가 이뤄지고 있다. 그러나 이러한 접근이 자칫 도덕주의적 접근이라는 비판을 받기도 한다. 홀로코스트 교육이 보편화하는 만큼 성찰할 지점을 포착하는 것 역시 중요한 과제이다. 또한 홀로코스트 교육에 대한 경험적 실천과 이론화 작업이 아직 정교하지 못한 면이 있다. 다양한 교육 실천과 풍성한 담론의 형성으로 기존의 교육을 넘어서고자 하는 노력이 진행되길 기대해 본다.

영문 초록

Holocaust education has emerged after a period of silence and taboo after World War II as a public memory. Curricula and textbook narratives have reflected the Holocaust, and museums and memorials have been built. Organizations have emerged that specialize in developing Holocaust education programs. However, misconceptions, prejudices, and myths still persist in Holocaust education, and denial and distortion continue to grow with the rise of the far right. And given the violence of the Holocaust, the emotional burden cannot be ignored. These are issues that need to be addressed, and they are linked to South Korean history education. Trapped in nationalist mythology, textbooks fail to reflect the uncomfortable fact that Poles themselves were perpetrators, not just Nazi Germany, and like memories of the Vietnam War, they block the truth of perpetration. Holocaust denial and distortion has become a more serious problem in the era of post-truth. ‘Comfort women’ denial and May 18 denial are also often tied to the growth of right-wing forces and political extremism. Violence and human rights violations are not only a matter of knowledge, but also an area of emotion that requires careful consideration. The same is true for the issue of violence in Korea's modern history. There are attempts to broaden Holocaust education to include issues of anti-Semitism, racism, discrimination, human rights, and peace. However, this approach has been criticized for being too moralistic. As Holocaust education becomes more widespread, identifying points of reflection is an important challenge. There are still many areas of empirical practice and theoretical work on Holocaust education that are not yet well developed. It is hoped that efforts will be made to go beyond conventional education through diverse educational practices and the formation of a richer discourse.
