『詩經』 “彼其之子”에 대한 小考

국문 초록

『詩經』 “彼其之子”에 대한 해석은 역대로 일치하지 않았다. “彼其之子” 가운데에서도 특히 ‘其’자에 대한 해석이 논란의 중심에 있다. ‘其’에 관한 견해는 크게 세가지로 나뉜다. 첫째는 ‘其’를 어조사로 보고 ‘之子’를 ‘此子’로 이해하는 견해이다. 그러나 이 같은 해석은 ‘彼’와 ‘此’가 의미상 충돌하는 문제점이 있다. 둘째는 ‘其’를 ‘彼’와 연용된 쌍음절 지시대명사로 보는 견해이다. 하지만 『詩經』의 어법적 습관으로 미루어 볼 때 “彼其之子”의 ‘之子’는 ‘~의 자손’으로 풀이되므로 이 견해 또한 적합하지 않다. 셋째는 ‘其’를 姓氏로 보는 견해이다. 이 견해는 고고학적 자료와 문헌 등을 근거로 취해 충분히 설득력이 있다. 단, 여기서는 其氏를 商代 㠱(其)侯의 후손으로 파악하였지만, 其氏는 商代 㠱(其)侯와는 별개의 존재로서 西周 時期 일어나 周 왕실 그리고 姬姓 제후국들과 밀접한 관계를 가진 姜姓 支系의 㠱(其)氏로 이해된다. 이는 시편에서 “彼其之子”가 지배 귀족계층으로 나타나는 것과 부합한다.

영문 초록

Interpretations of “彼其之子” in The Book of Odes(詩經) have varied throughout the ages. Among “彼其之子”, the interpretation of the character ‘Qi(其)’ is at the center of controversy. There are three main views on ‘Qi(其)’. The first is the view that sees ‘Qi(其)’ as an auxiliary word and understands ‘ZhiZi(之子)’ as ‘this person(此子)’. However, this interpretation has a problem in that ‘that(彼)’ and ‘this(此)’ collide in meaning. The second is the view that ‘Qi(其)’ is a paired syllable demonstrative pronoun associated with ‘Bi(彼)’. However, judging from the grammatical habits of The Book of Odes, this view is also not appropriate, since ‘ZhiZi(之子)’ in “彼其之子” is interpreted as ‘a descendant of ~’. The third is the view of ‘Qi(其)’ as “family name or clan (姓氏)”. This view is persuasive enough based on archaeological data and literature. However, from this point of view, ‘Qi clan(其氏)’ is understood as a descendant of ‘Qi(㠱·其) clan’ in Shang(商) dynasty, but the ‘Qi clan (其氏)’, as a separate existence from ‘Qi(㠱·其) clan’ in Shang(商) dynasty, is understood as ‘Qi(㠱·其) clan’ in branch of Jiang(姜) family, arose in Western Zhou(西周) period and had a close relationship with the royal family of Zhou(周) and neighboring states of Ji(姬) family. This coincides with the appearance of “彼其之子” as an aristocratic ruling class in The Book of Odes.
