The construction of Seocheon-eupseong Fortress was proposed in terms of geopolitics that the area was the entrance to the west coast. This was especially insisted by Choi Yoon-deok and Shin-Gae. As a result, Seocheon Eupseong Fortress was constructed with a circumference of 2,265 cheok, a height of 9~12 cheok, a height of yoejang (defense facilities on the wall)of 3 cheok, chiseong (the convex-form of walls for defense) 14, door 2,defense facilities on the wall 500, and well 5, etc. It is believed that the construction of Seocheon-eupseong Fortress began in the 20th year of KingSejong’s reign or earlier and completed before 1st year of King Munjong. Recently, excavations of Seocheon-eupseong Fortress have been conducted mainly in the east gate sites, fortress walls, and moats, etc. The corner-stone of the gate building in the east gate sites is on the ground of the earth and has already been completed. In particular, there is an open space in front of the gate, showing the same structure as the south gate ofBoryeongeupseong Fortress, the south gate of Nampoeupseong Fortress, and the south gate of Dangjin Myeoncheoneupseong Fortress in the early JoseonDynasty. The inside of the rampart was terraced, and the soil was piled up in layers. In particular, on the slope, the soil was piled up in reverse top revent the accumulated soil from flowing down. The achievement of Seocheon Eupseong revealed through excavation is the existence of moat. This can be seen from the record that there is no moat in the Annals of King Munjong, indicating that it was built later. Mok-ik (Wooden stick) was found inside the moat, showing that it was the same structure as Dongnaeeupseong Fortress in Busan or Nampoeup-seong Fortress in Boryeong. In addition, fortress with the convex-form of walls for defense and Pit features were excavated. In particular, the latter were surveyed in two rows, inside and outside, between the walls and moats. Its characteristic is currently unknown, but it is presumed to be a defense facility made of trap pit or trees. In the future, the excavation of Seocheon-eupseong will be continued, and various construction techniques and new remains will be found accordingly. This will also be needed further study.
