상징성과 종교성으로 본 한중 서왕모 신화의 차이

국문 초록

서왕모 신화는 한중 양국에서 모두 장생불사의 상징으로 널리 사랑받았으나 중국에서 종교적으로 발전해 나간 것과 달리 한국에서는 종교로서의 흔적을 찾아보기 어렵다. 대신 그 상징성이 크게 부각되어 조선 왕조 예제(禮制)에 적극적으로 활용되었는데 그 예로 12종의 서왕모 신화 모티프 정재(呈才)를 들 수 있다. 이는 가례(嘉禮)에 두루 쓰이며 반복적인 축수(祝壽)를 통해 군신 간의 위계질서를 효과적으로 구축할 수 있게 했다. 즉 서왕모의 장생불사 상징이 중국에서 종교적 원인으로 성행했다면 한국에서는 유교 정치사상에 따라 운용되었다는 점에서 차이를 보인다.

영문 초록

The myth of the Queen Mother of the West was widely loved as a symbol of longevity and immortality in both Korea and China, but unlike it developed as a religion in China, it is difficult to find traces of it as a religion in Korea. Instead, its symbolism was greatly emphasized and actively used in the Confucian rituals of the Joseon Dynasty. As an example, there were 12 kinds of court dances adopted the motif of the myth of the Queen Mother of the West widely used in royal auspicious ceremonies. As the Confucian rituals wishing the king a long life repeatedly was the effective way to establish the a hierarchical order between the ruler and the ruled. In other words, the symbol of longevity and immortality of the Queen Mother of the West appears homogeneous in both China and Korea, it was operated by Confucian political ideology in Korea, whereas it was popular for religious reasons in China.
